I just brought BSNL EVDO card one week back. My house is 0.75km from the telephone exchange. But i am able to get only 200 to 250 kbps and downloading speeds are of max 15 kbps. I went to bsnl exchnage here they were are also getting the same speeds. I am not sure why this is so less, when they cliam around 2.4mbps. If you have any information on this please reply.
EVDO connects on 2 different technology
one is EDGE and other is CDMA x 1, if the tower which you are connecting has edge enabled then you will be getting 2.4 mbps but if there is no edge tower then it will work on cdms which is 144 kbps so if you are getting 15 KBps then you are getting 120 kbps which is kind of similar to 144 kbps the speed of cdma x 1.

so you are connecting to a cdma tower and in this tower you will get max 144 kbps

Hi ,

Thanks a lot for your information. I have checked this before i bought EDVO card. On my EVDO application it displays like EVDO, if it was CDMA network it would have displayed as 1X. Now in coimbatore only two places are having EDGE technology, my house is near to one of those two. Infact when i went to the telephone exchange where they also have EDGE technology implimented in the tower there also i was geting only 150 kbps to 200 kbps. And the junior engineer from BSNL has checked this and told me that network traffic is the reason for this low speed. Because of this low speeds i am not able see any videos on line, for every 10 sec it starts buffering.

I have seen the speed in whole day i was not at all able to see more than 200kbps any time until now. can it be a problem with bsnl network?

did you ever get 2.4Mbps speed at any time. how is this at your place?

Default good service (but still in testing phase)

I m using EVDO for the last 4 months at my home and my office.

Some times at my home (nearer to tel.exchange) it works fantastic giving constant download speed upto 2 mbps (though mostly at night) but sometimes it drops to 128 kbps when the signal is weak (which happens quite a lot)

I would suggest all members to wait a little before buying it.

Default BSNL CDMA 2000 1X EVDO USB Modem

DearFriends,
There appears to be more of enthusiasm and less of info. It is BSNL's EVDO USB Modem that is the 'latest' thing! Please do NOT get confused with EVDO Data-Card, which an older generation/version.

BSNL's EVDO USB Modem gives consistently download data transfer rate between 60 to 80 kilo BYTES per second! Whereas data-card may give 144 kbps (i.e. equal to 18 kilo BYTES per sec). So USB Modem is 3 to 4 times faster.

One may buy USB modem for Rs.3500/- from BSNL or opt for rented one. If you go for rent option, then plan charges would be Rs.550/- per month and modem rent Rs.200/- per month. You would be paying Rs.843/- per month (tax included) for unlimited access.

At present, these EVDOs are city or state specific. So no roaming for a few months to come.

EVDO USB modem & data card are same in respect of speeds & technology that's why the same name EVDO.it seems you are confused about this.EVDO USB modem is for those people who either don't have a laptop or whose laptop doesn't support EVDO data card.also if there are no EVDO enabled towers in your area you will get the same 144kbps on both USB modem & data card.also EVDO is currently available at very few places in India & is mostly present in kerala & some parts in & around bangalore i think.

Smile All about evdo, evdo vs gprs

GPRS is the worst option and it can never be used as a primary connection. It just comes useful at case of emergency when no other option is available. Regarding bsnl evdo, for the 250 mb plan you get assured speeds above 100kbps and for evdo they claim 2mbps speeds but effectively you get around 400-800kbps range always.

Regarding public ip, you will be getting a ip in local range just like Airtel Mobile Office, but evdo is upgrading after few months they will give public ip to all users. The drawback of not getting public ip is, you cannot connect to your evdo pc from outside. By outside i mean like using access your pcs desktop from some other internet pc. Other drawbacks are low torrent speeds comparatively to broadband, no downloads from rapidshare.

Regarding coverage in your area, bsnl wont allow you to use it for few days. Once you take the connection, you cannot discontinue it until you complete 3 months. You donot have to pay 3 months rental in advance but just you cannot terminate your connection within 3 months period.

There is a process I heard called feasibility check, visit your local central exchange and talk to the JTO there. He would be able to help you with checking whether evdo is available in your area. And ya if the tower is within 2 km, you will get good speed.

If you are taking EVDO, you can take it on Rental or Purchase. If you are taking it on rental, initially you have to pay Rs. 2405 including the first month rental and then every month Rs. 550+200 If you are taking it on purchase scheme, initially you have to pay Rs. 4550 and pay monthly Rs. 550 only.

If you are taking NIC Card, and you are taking it on rental, you have to pay initially around Rs.1650+tax(may be changed now) and then monthly Rs. 400(including rental of card). If you are purchasing you have to pay Rs. 3850 + tax and monthly Rs. 250.

I suggest you take NIC Card of Rs. 250 on rental basis. That would be worth it. Why i said rental is because if you are purchasing any instrument from bsnl, after the warranty period expires and you have an issue with the device, you cannot repair it. BSNL does not have facility to repair it so usually they will only replace. Since your warranty has expired, they wont take your device to replace. If you take it to the manufacturer company service center, they wont take it since its bulk import by bsnl and has to be sent through bsnl only. In short you will have to throw that device after 1 year if it turns out faulty.

ou need to visit your central exchange. All BSNL exchanges donot issue the data card. Also I am not sure in the cases when the cards are out of stock. Sometimes you might have to pay in advance for cards, if they are not in stock, not sure though.

If you dont have a LAPTOP go for a USB one. Your speeds wont vary with a usb or pcmcia. Just if something matters is that in USB EVDO, you can extend it with a USB Extension cable. This comes usefull if you get a signal at a particular point in your room and you can extend the usb device to that point with an extension cable.
Finally while taking the connection, go with a copy of your existing bsnl telephone bill. It would speedup the process. . It depends on the availability of instruments there and feasibility. It can take from 3 days to 1 month depending on the availability.

Default evdo at kolkata and my experience

link of the advertisement:

www . calcuttatelephones . com/advt/usb_datacard_e.jpg

detail information:

www . calcuttatelephones . com/data_card.shtml

i was excited to know the fact that evdo is now available in kolkata. but its available only two localities. i called customer care 1800 233 1500 (the no given in advt). I got to know that bsnl has started evdo service in three area.

1. rajarhat / newtown
2. territa bazar (www . wikimapia . org/#lat=22.5731609&lon=88.3556986&z=15&l=0&m=a&v=2)
3. ulluberia

my residence is near to territa bazar. (1.2 KM aerial distance). Today I went to BSNL World, City Centre Salt Lake (along with all required documents, money, application form). Due to lack of information they (bsnl world) told me to wait for two days. they will verify whether i am able to get evdo as i am not from rajarhat/newtown area.

then i called 033-2234-9959
(Shri S. Dutta, GM(CMTS)
www . calcutta . bsnl . co . in/Appellate%20Authority/Appellate%20Authority.htm)

he gave me another no where could i clarify my all doubts.
033 2213 1616
033 2213 1619

on calling first no, the person on the call told me that i am not able to get evdo as the service is available only for rajarhat/newtown area. i told him that if i buy evdo i can get 144kbps speed and i have no problem with that (as in near future i am expecting the service will better) He clearly told me outside newtown net connection will not be available.

ultimately I am confused.. the aerial distance from my place to rajarhat/newtown is 8.4 km (measured using wikimapia)

my questions:
1. Can I access internet@144kbps if somehow i buy evdo.
2. Is this correct that one can get 2mbps speed if its near to the specific tower otherwise 144kbps speed anywhere?

NB thanks animan for detail info about evdo.
