    Default Bsnl Home 1800 Plan

    Folks,
I want to ask you a question on BSNL HOME 1800 PLAN..
Can someone clear the confusion i'm having with the expected download and upload speeds for this particular plan. Please answer the following:

    BSNL HOME 1800 PLAN
    BSNL's ASSURED DOWNLOAD SPEED: ?????
    BSNL's ASSURED UPLOAD SPEED : ?????

PRACTICAL D/L SPEED ACHIEVED AT HOMES: ???? (MIN-MAX VALUES)
PRACTICAL U/L SPEED ACHIEVED AT HOMES: ???? (MIN-MAX VALUES)

NOTE: When i checked the internet speeds at Speedtest.net with the central server being located in Mumbai (and i'm living in Hyderabad), i got the D/L Speed of 4134kb/s and U/L speed of 476kb/s.

I am currently having Home 500 plan and i am also changing to Home 1800 plan
in Home 500 plan i am geting download speeds upto 240 kBps
And i expect that with Home 1800 plan speeds must reach to 450 kBps atleast!!
Upload speeds will be pathetic as far as i am concerned

Well the decision is yours. But have you done an ROI (return on investment) analysis?

In Home 500 plan you are promised a speed of 256 kbps to 2 mbps (32 kBps to 256 kBps) and you are already getting 1.92 mbps (240 kBps). For this you are paying Rs. 500 pm and your usage limit is 1.5 GB (for Home 500 C). You also get a waiver of Rs. 180 pm on fixed line phone rental and 175 free calls.

In Home 1800, you are promised a speed of 512 kbps to 2 mbps (64 kBps to 256 kBps). Your usage limit will be 10 GB and there is no waiver on fixed line phone rental nor 175 free calls. For this you will pay a whopping Rs. 1800 per month.

So please do the math before jumping the gun.

Finally, please do not blindly believe any speed test, however reputed

Home 1800 looks like a great plan, 2.5/5GB are both quite low for heavy internet usage.

Home500 is worth it if :
    1) You do not plan on downloading much during the daily (forget about torrents)
    2) You do not plan on much online gaming
    3) Minimal internet VoIP/skype usage
    4) You are happy with scheduling all downloads during the night

The only problem is bandwidth in India is just ridiculously costly
Or, people just don't really want to spend much on internet.
I remember paying up to $100 in the US for electricity per month and $40-$60 for internet (This is quite a bit compared to average salaries there).

But in India we are used to paying next to nothing for utilities and no one wants to spend on revenue expenditure.
