I have a basic question. Without connecting to internet, how can i access the ip address given in the procedure. I have applied for internet connection and i may get the modem in a day or 2. After the getting the modem, how do i physically connect the modem to my Toshiba laptop. Appreciate your help!!!

Get yourself a Cat5 straight cable with RJ45 crimped on both side (probably you'll get one with your modem itself), switch on the modem and your system.
Then type the address 192.168.1.1 in your browser and you'll be in modem's configuration page. You will be asked to enter a Userid and Password which might be admin.

And if it comes with an USB cable only then you need to install the driver also.

Looking at your situation, I think that you must be connected via USB and your modem is not being recognized by XP.

If yes, please use the modem CD and install the modem drivers. Else connect to the modem using ethernet (RJ45) lan cable.
