PPPoE Mode - Always on , Bridge mode with a Windows XP PPPoE Dialer doesn't work , I always get error 678 when I dial , the only way to connect is using PPPoE mode ( always on )

it seems that bsnl does not let unlimited users use bridge mode so that their account can not be misused if their account is not port binded.

I seriously doubt that , I know of at least 8 people here in Pune who use Pronet / Linksys / Dlink routers with UL900 / UL900 Plus plans and have configured their router to work in Bridge mode and can successfully dial in using a PPPoE XP dialer or one created by RASPPPOE . neither of which works for me . All broadband connections after Jan 2007 are port bound

those 8 peoples are using their own modem or bsnl provided modem?i maybe wrong but it is my opinion that bsnl provided modems are preconfigured such that unlimited users can use only pppoe mode & limited users bridge mode.

BSNL modems are not pre-configured. The BSNL guys who install the CPE always install modem in bridge mode regardless of the tariff plan. In any case, we can always reset the modem using the RESET switch on the back panel.

May be nothing is wrong with your configurations. May be its a fault of cable. My friend this type of problem. He complained & got his telephone wires changed, from the source or hub ( i.e. those box kinda things on street). Then his speed to increased.

Thats what I thought as well but this is a brand new line , not even a month old and the hub you are talking about is actually called the junction box outside your house where everyones cables come from as well , the line man informed me that the cable that he was laying was broadband certified . There are 2 types of cables that BSNL provides 1) Standard white ( good for telephone signals ) 2) Black ( Broadband Certified Cable ) this is what the line man from BSNL laid for me , it's actually pretty sturdy as compared to the standard white / grey cables .

Any other suggestions ??? .... I am running out of options here ... but this thread is still going strong , I appreciate everyones input

BNSL is not restricting Bridge mode connection since in my area all type of connections are coming with SIEMENS C2110 Modem through which bridge/PPoE Mode can be set. Also all connections are port binded.

Try checking the settings, there must be some wrong configuration in Modem as well as in Windows dialer.

It would be better if u upload few screen shots of dialer and modem settings page.

It seems that their is a problem in your line i.e; underground line from exchange to DP or junction Box

The phone lines From exchange comes to the piller and then to DP (Distribution point) outside home.

Just go to exchange and ask them to check the line for resistance and for earth.

If resistance is between 1-10 then slow speed and if >10 the u frequently disconnect

And if line is earthed then also u will get slow speed

Just contact ur area SDE or line man. This will surely solve ur problem

Resistance should be zero

Sorry for the late response , I was hospitalized for quite some time .

I just came back from the BSNL Exchange , asked them to do both the tests that you suggested

Resistance
Earth

The SED conducted the test in 5 minutes and found out that there is a slight earthing in my line this is why there is a massive fluctuation in the speed .

Had a word with the line man who said that he will rectify the issue today ..

Thanks a ton to every one for all your suggestions .

Special thanks to "Amit_SIngh " , looks like your suggestion worked .

Still waiting for the Lineman to come though .
