    Default Home 900 UL Plus Speed Issue !!! Someone Please Help !!!

    Hi All ,

    Let me start by congratulating everyone in this forum for the amazing support provided . It's truly been better than calling the 40 + year old Customer Care reps at the 1800 number to get your Broadband related issues sorted out .

    On that note , here is my problem , I thought I knew it all but now I am stuck like every other newbie with BSNL Broadband issues

    I just got my BSNL Broadband connection on ( 11.02.2008 ) - HOME UL 900 Plus

    The download speed is extremely slow

    On torrents with "7000 + seeds" I get a speed of between 8 to 13 KBps

    On direct download it starts at 31.2 KBps and then 2 minutes later the speed will come down to 8KBps

    There are no IE windows / apps / downloads running in the background

    I have formatted my machine just in case there could be a virus hogging on the bandwidth .
    I have reset the router and reconfigured it 4 to 6 times
    The physical connections looks good and have been checked hundreds of times already including the external telephone cable .

    =====================
    Here Is My System Info :
    =====================
    AMD Athlon 3200+
    1 GB DDR
    500 GB HDD
    Win XP SP2
    Linksys AM300 ADSL 2 + 1 port router ( connected via ethernet )
    I live 300 Meters from my exchange
    Brand new line
    Modem configured in PPPOE Mode because on selecting Bridge mode and creating a PPPOE dialer in Win XP I get Error 678 and can only get connected to BSNL Broadband is by configuring my router as PPPOE and entering the user name and password in the router itself

    =======================

    hello jakemake123456
    in the ul 900 plus plan speed is capped to only 256kbps which means the maximum download speed which will you get is 32kBps (256/8) and this is not dedicated speed which means there will be always up and down in speed,so regarding the speed problem you cant do anything except for..................waiting & waiting & waiting and so on.....................
    i have also UL 900 plus plan i also get the same speeds but i have lots of patience i leave my laptop whole day running or sometimes two days!!!

    thanks

    Thanks for the reply but I would like to get speeds in the range of 25 KBps + however even on direct downloads i don't get more than 10 KBps ..

    I do understand that the speed is 256 kbps / 8 = 32 KBps but I am not getting more than 10 KBps that's my issue .

    95 % of my friends in Pune do not get less than 30 KBps on the same plann this is why im getting pissed

    Does my Line Attenuation & SNR values look ok or is it a problem with it ?

    i am not much of a expert but your internet netmask value seems odd to me.it generally is 255.255.255.0 assuming this value is the same as subnet mask in IP properties of LAN connection.your internet gateway assuming it a dns server may also be the problem.check these values with your friends getting speeds above 30KBps.

    Please check the screenshots of my ADSL Modem & Lancard settings . Can you check to see if there is anything wrong with the settings ... I am still getting speeds between n 2 to 12 KBps every day ..I used to get more than this speed on EDGE with Airtel

    your internet gateway set in modem is different from the dns server addresses you set in local connection properties.my suggestion is use "obtain dns server address automatically" & see if it helps.also try direct download from site like microsoft & use download manager like flashget with 8 simultaneous connections.
    did you check these settings with your friends about gateway,internet mask etc?

    I would suggest you to go for the 500 plan if you need higher speed and try downloading everything during free night time period of 2-8, this way you can download it fast whereas it will take days for you to download in unlimited plans. Because in unlimited you will not get high speeds no matter how you tweak you pc!

    I dont want to run the risk of getting an inflated bill I will be happy if I get up to 32 KBps ( 256 Kbps ) but ....... it's not happening ... Cant figure out if its a problem with the telephone line ... or my network setup ..... can anyone please comment on my Line Attenuation and SNR values ???

    your line attenuation & snr values are fine.did you go through my previous post to change the dns server address to automatic or you ask your friends who are getting 30KBps about the various settings i mentioned?

    I use UL900 & get a speed of 29-32 KBPS. Those who are getting low speeds can try to turn off automatic updates. download from rapidshare to see what speeds you are getting. If speed is around 30 Kbps then you can conclude nothing's wrong with your connection. For torrents try to use Utorrent. Make sure ports are configured properly. I've been using torrent for a long time and get good speeds(when there is enough seeds).

    only unlimited plan from bsnl is Rs.900 with 256kbps speed.if you share this speed among 6 computers it will be very slow.better to go for business plans with more limits.here is the link for tariffs

    ^^ Whats your downstream SNR? I hope u are aware that the downstream speed is dependent of the SNR.

    Default Few Netwroking tips

    I am not expert in netwroking but still i can hel it.

    There are few settings in TCP/IP Configuration. The Router/Modem provided by BSNL has inbuilt DHCP Server.

    Suppose the IP Address is 192.168.1.2
    Subnet Mask is 255.255.255.0 this means than that the last figure i.e., 2 can be randomized between 0-255 and others are not changable.

    Again the Gateway is IP Address of that machine which is used to connect u to the internet. By default the IP of BSNL Modem is set to 192.168.1.1.

    Finally, DNS (Domain Name System) is a database system that translates a computer's fully qualified domain name into an IP address.

    The DNS Provided by BSNL is (In northern region/India):
    61.1.96.69: Primary
    61.1.96.71: Alternate

    PPPoE Mode - Always on , Bridge mode with a Windows XP PPPoE Dialer doesn't work , I always get error 678 when I dial , the only way to connect is using PPPoE mode ( always on )

    it seems that bsnl does not let unlimited users use bridge mode so that their account can not be misused if their account is not port binded.

    I seriously doubt that , I know of at least 8 people here in Pune who use Pronet / Linksys / Dlink routers with UL900 / UL900 Plus plans and have configured their router to work in Bridge mode and can successfully dial in using a PPPoE XP dialer or one created by RASPPPOE . neither of which works for me . All broadband connections after Jan 2007 are port bound

    those 8 peoples are using their own modem or bsnl provided modem?i maybe wrong but it is my opinion that bsnl provided modems are preconfigured such that unlimited users can use only pppoe mode & limited users bridge mode.
