those speeds are quite good.. infact you can get even more speeds.. ur torrents have only 2 or 3seeds.. better and more popular torrents will give more speeds..first of all that torrent in utorrent has no seeds.. thats why its not downloading.. another reason could be because utorrent and bittorrent is using the same port?? both cannot use the same port.. so one will give an error

always aim for high.i got speeds from 200-210KBps though i was using 1 private & 1 public torrent.even for public ones try to get speeds of 50-60KBps if there are,say,60 seeders & 120 peers for a public torrent.

port no. does not matter much.you can select any from 50000-65000.it depends on no. of seeds & peers & uTorrent settings for connections.

Just4kix, this is an amazing and step by step guide to explain on how to port forward for a newbie like me. I used your steps to port forward my regular bsnl modem and got it successfully. I was trying various other methods to it till and found this superb post and got it perfect and my utorrent is showing green now! thank you once again.

first of all don't turn off the WPA or other people will be able to connect to your wifi & use the net while you will get a huge bill.i don't know much about linksysWRT54G but many others here are using it.did you setup your modem+linksys setup according to this---

am on the unlimited 900 account...thats y...turned off WPA...wanted to eliminate all bottlenecks...yes...i did follow kix's guide...and....it works...in the sense...browsing and http download is great...it's only utorrent that suffers....i've got it directly connected from the dlink via ethernet...and i get speeds of 28 to 30 kbps...the moment i connect the linksys...wham bam !!

still turning off WPA was a bad idea.even if you don't get huge bill if others are using your net you will get lesser speeds.

for 900 plan average download speeds are 28-30KBps as uTorrent shows speeds in KBps not kbps.

    send a PM to just4kix.

WPA Wireless security will not affect torrent speeds - why did you get this idea? Turn it on immediately. Just as whitestar said, even if there is no problem on billing (u being on UL 900 plan), if someone is 'riding' your network, you will get less bandwidth.

To get good torrent speeds, you must ensure the following:

    a) Enable port forwarding. Your D-link modem is in bridged mode - so no problems there; all ports are open. You must open ports on WRT54G.
    - Login to WRT54G and go to 'Applications & Gaming' --> Port Range Forward
    - Enter the following:
    ..... Application = UTor1
..... Port From = 1024 (or your selected port in uTorrent)
..... Port to = 65535 (or your selected port in uTorrent)
    ..... IP Address = <ip address of your PC/laptop>
..... Enable = Check this 'ON'

    Click on Save Settings.

For more details, refer here: Port Forwarding for the Linksys WRT54G

    b) With a UL 900 plan, the maximum download/upload speeds are 32 KB/s each. So limit the torrents to one download at a time.

Alternately, if port forwarding on WRT54G does not work (no reason why it should not), try out the following:

    a) Reconfigure the d-link modem to PPPoE mode
    b) Reconfigure the WRT54G to Automatic DHCP mode
    c) Enable DMZ on d-link
    d) And for heaven's sake, turn wireless security on. Please read the primers on Wireless security:

and i forgot the main point....ummm both my laptop and desktop are wireless...the laptop has a netgear WG511 PCMCIA card...and the desktop has a netgear USB WIFI dongle..basically..since im always downloading torrents...use the laptop...for less power consumption...with dhcp on on..wil nnot an alternate IP be assigned if both are on ?? so even if i port forward to a particular ip say 192.168.2.2...wouldn't that defeat the process ??

okay...idid as told me to...the dlink is in bridge mode...i did not touch any other settings...configured the linksys to WPA on...set up the range as specified....connected everything...bang...it works....utorrent sped up to qbout 20 - 22 kbps...and then after 5 mins..it started dropping...went down to 5kbps....no data transfer...and then 2-3 Kbps....and u cant blame the range coz im sitting with the laptop rite in front of the wireless router...man this is freaking me out...

you said you have enabled DHCP.for port forwarding to work correctly you must have a static internal IP for both laptop & computer.you must turn off the DHCP in linksys & assign static IP address to computer & laptop(choose address above 129.168.1.3 e.g.192.168.1.5 & 192.168.1.6).as you already said it to port forward you have to specify an IP & if your IP is dynamic(DHCP)ports won't be forwarded if your laptop gets a different IP from the one you set to forward ports to.

    Default success

    you're a mind reader...a few hours before you posted this...thats exactly wat i did...disabled DHCP in the linksys...assigned static ip..voila...great speeds !!!

the linksys has dmz on...will try to turn it off and specify a port number to be forwarded...is that more secure ???

you can turn off DMZ.it is only necessary if there are problems in port forwarding despite trying all the options.since now you have set the ports to forward to static IP's from linksys there should be no problem in turning off the DMZ.
