If your BSNL connection is port-binded (linked to your phone number) then you have no issues. Old BSNL connections were not port binded - these can somewhat be identified by the real IP address of the router - 5x.xxx.xxx.xxx. New BSNL connections, especially in tier 1/2 cities are port binded - these can loosely be identified by real ip addresses 117.xxx.xxx.xxx.

It all depends upon the area. On certain areas, the port binding technology has been implemented. On some other areas, it is yet to be implemented. If your area has port-binding technology, your username and password cannot be misused. Otherwise there is the risk of misuse.
Port-binding has been implemented mostly in urban areas and even there only particular parts are using port-binding technology. The village and semi-village areas don't have them and hence has a great chance of getting hacked!
You can check whether your Ip is port binded or not by simplying trying to use your account from someone's elses landline no.
you can safeguard yourself from such an attack by keeping your telnet, http, ftp ports closed ............ this can be done by unchecking any option available in the modem which states as remote administration of the modem etc.
and to this i would like to add although in mostly all the routers supplied by BSNL remote administration is kept unchecked but still they are remotely configurable (not all but some have this problem )...........
@rameshjeee
My Ip address starts from 5x.xxx.xxx.xxx
How can I check whether my connection is port-binded,if not then how can I prevent it from hacking?@just4kix

This subject is renewed periodically.
Whether you use "DIALUP" mode or ""AlwaysON"
accessing your userId and password is a random attempt.
Usually the modem/router IP address is 192.168.1.1 and
userId for modem admin and password. admin.
( Precaution : CHANGE the password at least now )
We are given Dynamic IP's. for instance mine now is
59.96.xx.xx
Next time it will change to 59.xx.yy.yy
Just type this address in the address bar of your browser.
Then the modem access page may open.
( provided you are on line )
Then try.
(HINT: this is another method to access your modem if you cannot access in normal manner.
Assuming you are connected to Internet).
My IP address? Free IP Address tracer, IP address lookup, IP address finder
In dialer mode your Id is not stored in the modem.
If PPP/PPPoE in WAN Id is seen and password as xxxxxxx
which can be extracted/decoded.
Para two :
After accessing your modem settings the "Hacker" can
only corrupt the settings , and you may lose Internet connection. and may have to RESET the modem for reconnection.
Accessing your computer folders/files etc not possible.
Para four:
Usually a heavy download/usage is seen without your knowledge due to
automatic updates, ( AV Upd)and specially Google's services.
I have access to 59.xx.xx.xx ( mine as well as my friend's)
for the past two years,
and never succeeded in using his account , even with his permission !
we are connected to same exchange 24xxxxxx!
Para 5:
please mention your modem/router model make :
check whether Client TR_069 or SNMP options are available.
Usually Airtel users are affected by this service.
