login your machine meaning another user?yes it can be done.open Task Manager & click on Users tab.if only you are using the computer at that time then there should be only one active user which would be your account name.there should not be any other user if no one else is logged on(e.g.you were using administrator or guest account & then you use Switch User option in windows logoff then the other account will also be active).

it is very unlikely though that someone would be actually able to connect to your computer using remote user as to connect in this way you must know the IP of computer to connect to & as all home users have dynamic IP there is no way for a ordinary person to know which IP your computer is having every night as it will be different.

yes he can & the reason i gave above is valid for this situation also.since it is very unlikely that you are going to be the only person using the bsnl from 2-8AM there would be multiple IP's in the result of such checking & normally you can't find out which IP belongs to which person/computer.

OK i was wrong.i just completed an IP addresses check & i can remotely connect to many users using windows & may probably even able to delete/rearrange their files in certain directories.also i can identify some computers by their router MAC addresses & can login to modems of many users.though i seriously doubt anyone will spend their time doing this.

WOW!level of awareness about network security is really low among users here.i can login to every one else's modem & some don't even realize that their entire drives are visible on the network & anyone can just move or delete their entire drives over the network.

yes, whitestar is absolutely right, i totally agree with him!!!Indian users have very low security knowledge.. especially airtel users...Their modems can be easily remote controlled and can be easily manipulated...very dangerous!!!read my post regarding this Prashanth Speaks-Technology and Life: Change your default modem/router password for security reasons

serious hackers don't waste their time & skills on such ordinary less financially rewarding jobs.unless you run some kind of e-commerce site or do heavy online transactions nobody is going to hack your computer.at most they will use your computer as a part of botnet sending spam or launching DDoS attacks against their target websites.

when your computer acts as a botnet or launches DDos attacks on other servers thats when your computer is hacked!!!and it can put you into serious trouble, as if anything serious occurs when the company server which has been hacked traces back they will knock at your pc...Hackers do hack home computers to hide their identity ,so they do their hacking through home computers!!they very rarely do it directly as the chances of them getting caught would increase!!

you are mistaken in understanding how botnet/DDoS works.a botnet is a network of thousands of computers being controlled to lauch a DDos(distributed denial of service)attack & it is called distributed because the network of computers is spread across the globe & my friend it is not illigal in a way because this kind of attacks means that each computer of the botnet is sending a request to the target website at same time which results in crashing of website.similar thing happens to many popular websites if they release some very popular content on their site & many people try to open the website.its just that botnet do this thing on the order of those controlling it while in later case it is just the popularity of some content on websites.no company can blame you for this in any court of world & that is why companies either blocks the IP's of such botnet for a short period or they simply pay the hackers to stop their attack.even if companies decide to take legal actions it can only be taken against the person/persons who were controlling the botnet & it can be easily verified by security experts that a normal home user like you has nothing to do with this.
