    Default Bridge mode with wireless.

Can anybody tell me how to connect to net in bridge mode rather than PPPOE. I configured my WGR614 netgear wireless router and it has automatically configured in PPPOE mode. I would like to control when my net is ON.

Also one more thing. Is it possible to share and transfer files between my desktop and laptop using the wireless router. I tried configuing a home network involving the desktop, laptop and the wireless router, but cant make head or tail of it.

    Thanks

to connect multiple devices/computers to a modem/router it must be set up in pppoe mode.in bridge mode you can not connect more than one devices to net independent of each other.you have to make one of your computer gateway & keep it on 24hrs if you want to connect to net using your laptop & you have set up bridge mode.

it can be done.just make sure that IP addresses of laptop & computer are in same range,say,192.168.1.x & same subnet mask e.g.255.255.255.0.then use windows network wizard.

Actually I dont need to connect more than one device to the net at the same time. Either my desktop or my laptop will connect but not at the same time. So one of them has to be set as a gateway 24Hrs? Is there no other way out.

Regarding the file sharing I managed to setuo up the link. Thanks a lot.

hi hey i got slightly different problem but related to this ....
Actually i want to configure the IP access from my router.
I have configured my UT-300R2U modem in PPPoE modem and also WGR614.
Now i want to add another laptop in my wireless network but i also want to prohibit it from accessing the internet....How can i do this?
Do we have any option for restricting internet access by configuring the WGR614 firewall?
Or how can i do this?
    Please help...

I think you can always set the laptop to not connect automatically to the net if a wireless connection is recognised. Or you want something else?

Actually i want to allow the laptop to access the wireless network and i want to allow it to read data from the shared folders that i have on one machine which is on this wireless network .....
But at the same time i want to stop that laptop from accessing the internet that he can get when he gets connected to the Router......
So i was asking that do we have any options in the router where we can configure the firewall of the router and allow access to a computer by the IP address of that conputer?

Yes thats possible. Setup the laptop not to connect to internet automatically. Then enable file sharing in the laptop and the other system. You should be able to see those folders in the shared network. So your laptop is not connected to the net and also shared files can be accessed by the two sytems.

you can set up the modem/router in bridge mode.then you have to made a network in windows using windows network wizard for connecting to internet.after that whenever you click on "connect to" a window will appear in which you have to enter your bsnl username/password.however once a computer is connected you can not connect another computer as long as first is connected.

i don't get it.there should be no problem if you enable the DHCP in modem & set up in bridge mode.as soon as other laptop comes in range it will detect the wifi & connects to the wifi network.however if it tries to connect to net it must know your bsnl username/pass without which it will not be able to connect to net though it will be connected to wifi.

Hey thats what i am saying .....if i do as u say then i will be able to connect to the internet by only a single machine ....

    Ex :
    I got 3 comps .....2 laptops and a desktop
Now i connect the desktop with a wired connection from the wireless router.
One laptop i use at my office .....and other at my home .....
So i want to give internet access to the home laptop and not to the office laptop ...
at the same time i also want to give access to the desktop that i have.

So now the question is ...i want to have all the 3 machines connected to the router ....i mean desktop wired to the router and 2 laptops wireless through the router...but i want to prevent the laptop that i use at my office to connect to the internet whereas the home laptop and the desktop to connect to the internet .....?

I hope u got what i meant ...so now ....i need to thave the router in the pppoe mode....so that i can connect all the three through dhcp ....and now internet will be available on all 3 machines ...so i want to block one machine from accessing the internet ....
hence i thought if i will be able to configure the firewall of WGR614 wireless router then i will be able to block the port 80 on that office laptop .....so that it will be there on the wireless network via the TCP ip protocol ...but it will not be able to use the 80 i.e the HTTP protocol ....
So how can i procede .....?Cos WGR614 i am not getting any help on configuring the firewall .....

i don't think it can be done with pppoe.using bridge mode you can do this as i mentioned above & as for connecting your other laptop/desktop to net in bridge mode when one machine is already connected then you can make your desktop a gateway through which your other device can connect to net.

    Hi WhiteStar_999,

I have a quick question. I have a Airtel Broadband connection at home. I've 2 laptops both having 2 different VPN clients. One client works on PPOE mode but the other does not. So for that I had to configure it in Bridge mode.

But the issue is that I am not able to run both the laptops at the same time because of the dialer and sometimes me and my wife land up in a situation when we both need to access the VPN at the same time.

I read your above replies and in one of them you have replied that it is possible to connect 2 machines at the same time in Bridge mode also. We just need to make one the machines a Gateway and then connect the other via this Default gateway machine.

Can you please tell me the process of how to do that as I am not a good guy in Networking !!! You quick help will be highly appreciated.

    Thanks in Advance

use windows network setup wizard(all programs--->accessories--->communications).click on next, next & then select the option 2 "this computer connects to internet through another computer(gateway) on my network".rest of the steps are self explanatory.before doing this make sure to setup a local network between 2 computers just to be sure.

after this you have to keep your gateway computer on & connected to access net from the 2nd computer.

It is possible to restrict router access by using MAC id. Just enter the MAC Id in the restricted device list.
