go to control panel, user accounts.. create a new user.. and follow steps.. there you will find type of account.. there choose limited account.. this will give the user less power .. so he cannot change system settings...you dont have to use your static ip anywhere...unless you want to host a web server or ftp server etc etc.....your username should be a 14 character portal id.. it should have been given to u by bsnl.. if not .. call and enquire!!

For limiting the amount of bandwidth a particular PC can use in your network and also allowing certain amount of burst when there is enough bandwidth lying idle you can use CCproxy software which costs $60 something last time I checked.. You can find it here : Youngzsoft - Internet Connection Sharing Software Solution and Internet Email Server Solutions

I am sure there must be some open source solution available as well but this is the only one I know of.. will let you know if I can find something opensource.

you are getting error 678 because you have set modem to ppoe mode.. when you make the modem to dial automatically.. then you cannot dial through your computer...

    post to essebe

    hi sir,
i hav recently formatted hdd of my laptop .and in the first place i am nt sure whether a modem driver is required for connecting to bsnl.secondly, i tried to "create a new connection" over ethernet cable
but every time i tried logging into bsnl they give differnt error messages like " 'username/password invalid ' ,' remote computer didnt rerspond , ' phone line busy ' ", for the same username, password and other parameters. i dont have any cd to install the driver for modem (utstarcom 300r2 )
