EVDO card is a PCMCIA card (I believe, I am not sure). If that is the case, then it may not work on PC.
EVDO comes in both versions---PCMCIA & USB(for desktop etc).as for going with EVDO confirm that your area has EVDO high speed network(avg 1mbps) instead of simple CDMA 144kbps as both use same EVDO card.many users have reported that after getting EVDO card they get only 144kbps or lower & not higher speeds as proper equipments are not installed at towers.
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?
Thanks Whitestar.
I am told that the signal strength is very high and the EVDO enabled tower is geographically 3km away.
The USB adapter will fit into a PC isn't it? I saw photos of the same in BSNL Datacard website. I wanted to clarify before I invite BSNL personnel to visit and give me a EVDO card.
yes it will go into the USB port of your computer...i have heard other reviews from users in this forum that it ain't that fast.. people get only around 10kbps or so!!
Hi
10kbps?
It was old WLL pnone tech where BSNL promised data at 14.4 kbps.
The tech is now different 2000 1X RTT/EVDO CDMA rev0
Please do make a search on its capabilities.
BSNL's this tech gives 144kbps (actually thru USB it will be 115.2 Kbps and if thru Serial port - 144kbps) this is also offered by TATA and Reliance too.
They follow RTT.
But with EVDO you atleast get 115.2 in far flung areas and if the signal is good you can get 200 to 300 kbps atleast, and if later that 20 mins after you get the connection the spped rises to a max of 2.4 Mbps.
Most BSNL people dont know about this and they say its all for only a Laptop.
the adpaters shown in BSNL data card website(Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited - BSNL Data Card - High Speed Internet - Anywhere - Home Page) ( an un-official site) are photos ad they have USB adapters.
Between a PCMCIA card slot and a USB adapter the speed loss wont be 100+ times as you indicated.
Please dont mislead!
well yea they are promising 144kbps.. but other users in this forum who have already purchased this connection have mentioned in their posts that this connection is bad they dont provide good speeds!!!i havent used it just telling you what others said!!!
and i am talking about the internet connection speed not the transfer speed between the card and the laptop or pc.. you are not getting my point... i am talking about the service!!!
Hi, Super prash
Then what is the 2.4 mbps speed BSNL advertises about?
If you refer EVDO in any internet search and find-out in wikiperdia it suggests that it is 3G service. Rev 1 can give upto 3Mbps. I am sure they all mean its connection speed. Data transfer from card to PC is something that the tower does not decide about.
People have said that the signal strength varies but with 2000 1X as in service in chennai and even in kerala, the speeds are stupendous atleast 200 to 300 kbps in EVDO.
Other areas of BSNL still dont have this tech.
Hi Superprash
My original question is that can I connect a PC thru USB without suffering much loss in connection speed.

you can connect a PC through USB without speed loss(maybe a few kbps) but remember that EVDO equipments are currently installed at very few places & EVDO gives you shared static IP that means long waits after downloading something from sites like rapidshare.shared static IP means all users using EVDO in your area will get IP's like 10.x.x.x which will be different but your real IP will be same for all users & you can not change it by restarting your modem/card.also if any other user in your area using EVDO is downloading something from rapidshare you won't be able to download.
no there shouldnt be any loss in speed through USB
Thanks
I enquired the Guindy Customer service centre. They say they have 20 EVDO cards, but they themselves dont have any idea how it functions, and nether they have been thru any demo.
They advise me to go for " high speed internet" at 144kbps.
Having tasted landline broadband at 2mbps previously I am a bit reluctant to settle for less.
wonder ehn these officials start to promote EVDO? !!
144kbps??broadband starts at 256kbps according to guidelines here in our country.i seriously doubt EVDO cards in your area will be of any help because from the statement above it looks like you will get only 144kbps on EVDO & not the 1mbps average speed if the proper EVDO equipments are installed at tower. They advise me to go for " high speed internet" at 144kbps
Hi Whitestar
These officials dont know about EVDO. The agmpgchtd officials confirm EVDO tower is OK at the sight of my locality- Porur Tower that is geographically 1.5 kms from my home. I can even see the tower from my terrace.
So no doubt EVDO will work. The BSNL officals are reluctant to even come to my house to check with the device. I know the signal strength is very good- green light display in the LG CDMA devise.
Even the officials who installed the CDMA phone were surprised at the signal strength at my location. Meaning they are quite ignorant of the new 2000 1X technology.
"High speed internet" is what they claim at 144kbps. They never call it brroadband.
lol..High speed internet sounds way faster than broadband![]()
if EVDO is present in your area then maybe the local exchange people haven't tested it & thats why they don't know anything.ask at your local exchange if any other person has applied/got EVDO.i believe that not just EVDO installation but a technical check is also done by bsnl people before they start giving out EVDO connections.
OK... I understand with your clarification of "Sounds like" instead of "sounds".
The latter was imho conveying your thoughts but the former a ridicule of the way BSNL put across as a misleading advertising.
Thanks for the clarity.
Kums61,
I'm from Manapakkam too - who are these "agmpgchtd" folks?
BTW, do you have BSNL landline at your place?
