I have an old Pioneer Single Layer (A06) and an external LG Dual Layer burners. LG is quite good - I was going to buy Sony/Pioneer but the guy said that LG is quite good and far cheaper.

I prefer an external (USB) burner because I can take it along on my tours.

    Have not heard of AZUS.

BTW, Sony, Pioneer, etc. are just brands and both companies DO NOT manufacture the devices. They are made by some other companies and sold as OEM products to Sony/Pioneer. But, when you buy Sony or Pioneer, you are assured of stringent quality checks.

So another brand is just as likely to be as good.

he means ASUS.its slower.my suggestion is SONY DRU-190A(normal interface) or SONY DRU-845S(SATA interface).SATA is better as it is future proof because in coming months only SATA interface will remain on motherboards while normal/PATA interface is being phased out.

@spark, what you say is right. But at the moment BD burner is an overkill. Here is why:

    a) The BD write speeds are a tad low
    b) DVD-DL write speeds are very slow; same is true for DVD±RW, DVD±R, etc.
    c) BD media are very costly - one is unlikely to buy them in the near future (1+ years). Hence why buy an equipment that will not be used for its primary use?
    d) In 1+ years, the same writer will be costing $150 or less.

Hence my suggestion is to wait.

SONY DRU-190A(normal interface) or SONY DRU-845S(SATA interface) both should cost around Rs.1600-1700(may cost even less after budget now).SATA will be Rs.100-150 more than normal but my suggestion is buy the SATA one(make sure before buying you have an empty SATA port on your motherboard).also the DVD writer mentioned above(400$) is a blue-ray writer & currently it is not advisable to buy it.

I recently purchased the sony dvd writer and have so far have not found any major issues except for some issues here and there occasionally, but very minor, where the cd gets not burnt and gets wasted, etc.

i have burned 400 DVD's with my SONY DRU-820 & never got any issues till now.it just failed once writing to a CD-R & CD-RW.for burning DVD's SONY is great.though i admit i take various precautions while burning(both software & hardware related) which normally people don't take & may be thats why i have been able to burn so many DVD's without any error ever till now.

I suggest ASUS as you'd never use the max speed for DVD recording ,as the quality of a speedy burnt disc is lower than a slow speed writen disc(last longer).

I had 2 SONY drives,1 DVD combo and 1 dual layer DVD writer, both of them gave me problem as soon as the warrenty period was over,I don't know if it was a coincedence, but some of my friends also have problems with SONY.

And one suggestion, don't ever go for the latest ,first wait for the technology to ripe then buy.

I have an HP DVD dual layer one ,its around a year and I have no problem,go for a SATA enabled writer if you have SATA slots left.Gives good read speed.

I have a very bad experience with sony DVD writer. I will suggest you to go for Mosearbaer LiteOn DVD writer. They are cheap and best among any other available in market.

Lite ON dvd writer price here in varanasi is around Rs 1200 only.
