    Link LED must be steady after some time of blinking.unless its steady you can not connect.LINK LED is an indicator of your modem syncing with local exchange & establishing a connection.if your LINK led is continuosly blinking/going off after some time then something is wrong with your line.contact local exchange.also connect the phone line directly to splitter with no other phone connected before splitter.any phone must be connected after splitter.

    line--->splitter--->computer
    ..........splitter--->phone

    so if i dont connect a phone there's no need of spliter right.. cant i connect directly to line?? and just to make the situation clear!! i've got 4 leds in my modem!!

    1) Power -- red(remains steady)
    2) Link -- yellow ( normally blinks for sometime when the modem's just switched on and then goes steady)
    3) data -- green (blinks when data is being transmitted)
    4) pc -- green (also blinks with data when data is being transmitted)

    now the present condition is that the link blinks and goes off.. same with data.. and i'm not able to connect

    the the only possible reason seems to be line problem.can you open your modem home page(usually 192.168.1.1)?if yes then go to "status"---"broadband line" & look for values SNR Margin(local & remote) & Line Attn(local & remote).

    open the browser & then you will be asked for username & password.enter admin for both.then your modem home page will open.in left side you will see the status option as i said before in my post.

    it varies but usually SNR Margin(local & remote) must be greater than 10.usually local SNR margin is around 26 while remote is around 20(in my case).more SNR Margin(local & remote) the better.
    line attn shows how far are you from local exchange.i am about 2 km from exchange & my local attn is 28 while remote is 15.lesser line attn the better because it means you are closer to exchange.
    if your SNR margin is less than 10 you will get frequent disconnections & even unable to connect.if your line attn is very high you will get very poor speeds.
