Default Always connected to password protect

I have been using bsnl broadband for 4years. Recently my modem stopped working. The lights are not being lit. Its completely gone. So I thought why buy a bad modem for rs 1200rs again and buy a good modem. So I bought a Netgear modem DM111P.

The earlier modem I used was from bsnl and the model number was Dareglobal DB108. With this modem I used to type the username and password to get connected to internet. I used to leave the modem switched on, since a password was needed to get to internet.

But with the new modem Netgear, I am able to go to the their modem settings and I left the password and username blank( in the modem settings o netgear by typing 192.168.0.1 ). Then I took network connection and created a network connection with the option connect broadband using password and username. I then took the connection and it says error 679...remote computer did not respond.

Then I went to the modem settings typing 192.168.0.1.
I then typed the username and password and applied it. The internet gets connected. From now on my net gets connected when I switch the modem on. How can I make this always connected connection to a connection where I will be able enter a username and password and log on to internet. Its so inconvenient that my modem is upstairs and I am using my computer downstairs with LAN cable connected in my room from upstairs. It makes it difficult to switch on the modem and then come down to surf.

Is there any way to make it password protected.

you need to change your netgear from ppoe mode to bridged mode.. i think there is an option called "Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login?".. select NO

I went to 192.168.0.1...In that page I took ADSL SETTINGS IN THAT I HAVE A FEW OPTIONS....THOSE ARE

    VPI : 0
    VCI : 35
PROTOCOL : PPPOE BRIDGING (PRESENTLY) (THE OTHER OPTIONS IN THIS TAB ARE (PPPOA BRIDGING AND RFC2684 BRIDGING))
    MULTIPLEXING : LLC BASED
    PPP USERNAME : ********
    PPP PASSWORD : *******
DISCONNECT IF NO ACTIVITY : 0
    MTU : 1492

Then there is LAN ip setup there it gives the ip address to be entered.
Below is the address where u can get the information of the modem. You can see the information on page 25.

As you have said, I haven't seen any tab to enter the option whether a username or password is needed....What should I do now?
