Default Is it possible to protect always connected DSL modem with a username and password

Whenever someone switches on the modem the computer gets connected to the internet. Is it possible that I type a username and pasword to get connected to internet. I am using a NETGEAR ADSL MODEM DM111P.

Could somebody help me? I have seen certain BSNL users typing in thei username and password to get into internet by creating a new internet connection from Network settings. But when I created a new internet connection settings with the option connect to internet using username andd password it says erorr 678:remote computer did not respond. Could somebody find me a solution. I hae earlier posted a same msge, but nobody cld help me.

yes you can do so.. your new internet connection thingy is also correct.. but you need to make one change in your modem.. log on to your modem in the browser by typing http://192.168.1.1 and using admin as username and password .. then go to WAN settings and change 0/35 from ppoe mode to bridged mode.. then when you use your internet connection wizard in your computer you can dial and connect
