what is your upstream/downstream line rate?because here it is 2048kbps & 512kbps so i am guessing that either line speeds are not upgraded in my area or the modems have to be reconfigured by bsnl to get higher speeds(as one user here said that after rewriting his firmware at bsnl exchange when called with his modem he started getting speeds sometimes upto 8mbps like all others in his area).

Line Rate - Upstream (Kbps): 861
Line Rate - Downstream (Kbps): 12680

that is why you are being able to get such high speeds.in my modem rates are---
upstream--512kbps
downstream---2048kbps.
even if i try to chage the rates by switcing to another line mode(say,ADSL2) the line rates remains same after rebooting the modem & line mode also change back to default value.so i am guessing that in my area line speeds haven't been upgraded yet.

dont rely on the bsnl servers speed test!its like saying i can transfer a file at 100mbps from another computer in my lan!
and yeah im from kerala and i do get these speed spikes from time to time & not just when i start to download a file!
its been happening since sept of last year!
i think bsnl might upgrade to 4mbps next year! 8 mbps might take longer!
wish they gave unlimited 2mbit connections at decent prices!

P.S:and yes ur line is capable of 8mbps!and when they upgrade their speeds u wont hav to bother with anything... while others may hav to do some rewiring!

Default changes

well when i saw the modem configuration before it did show speeds
similar to this....
upstream--512kbps
downstream---2048kbps.

but now see this in the config page....
Line Rate - Upstream (Kbps): 1024
Line Rate - Downstream (Kbps): 16384
(modem=huaewai);
this may be what the exchange guys re wrote in my modem......an i did notice some changes in SNR values too from before...the modem was 3 years old..
may be newer modems r configured correctly...

i received my modem on 24th dec last year so it is just only 3 months old but still my line rates are---2048kbps & 512kbps.i believe that modems will be reconfigured only after a particular area's line speeds are increased.so first bsnl guys will increase the line speed by configuring/rewiring at the exchange & then they will ask for customers to bring their modems to reconfigure them too.

bsnl uses adsl 2(upto 8mbits) & not adsl 2+(upto 24mbits)!

if your modem has adsl 1 firmware yes your max speeds will be 2048/512 even if bsnl provides more!

also try going to the modem config page and play around with the settings! for me adsl2 & g.dmt works! and my line rates are 9122down and 768 up!

and if your modem doesnt hav adsl 2 in the settings call bsnl up and ask for firmware upgrade!

P.Slay with modem settings at your own risk!
