    Question DNS Problems

    Hello,
I am BSNL Broadband user from Nasik, Maharashtra for past 2 years.
I am using Broadband on multiple computers, with ADSL modem configured as PPP mode. (Direct connection with user info stored in Modem itself). Since the modem the BSNL guys gave is very old (SmartAX MT880) It doesn't have Auto DNS feature. I had manually enter the DNS in DNS area and same DNS in the computer LAN settings. I have been using 61.1.96.69 as primary and 61.1..96.71 as secondary DNS for 2 years now.
All of sudden today BSNL guys stopped these two DNS, my ADSL modem was able to connect to net but none of the PC were able to get the net access.
I know one of my friends in Dhule, Maharashtar is using the DNS as 218.248.240.46 while someone else in Nasik itself is using DNS as 168.95.1.1

Guys anyone of you whos a expert in networking can tell me a correct way to configure the Multiple connection? Is DNS way i am using is correct and if yes, Cant BSNL have single DNS so that it is easy for all users.

    Please reply.

    -Raghav

i am not an expert but i know for sure that bsnl uses multiple DNS servers & it is necessary because no single DNS server of bsnl can handle the load of all bsnl customers.just use any dns servers you like(friends, open dns etc) in place of your old two servers in all the settings of modem & computers.

Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

    Default Internet on multiple computers.

In the Ip address enter 192.168.1.xxx [xxx - any number between 2 & 255). This should be different for different computers connected to the same router. This is the static IP address.

    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

    Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

    Preffered DNS: 218.248.240.46

    Alternate DNS: 218.248.240.79

    These are BSN's DNS servers...
You can also try the two Open DNS: 208.67.222.222 or 208.67.222.220

    256 Kbps = 256/8 = 32 KBps

I too use UL 750. Your maximum speed is 32 KBps. If you are getting above 30 KBps, then it is a good speed.
