    Default Help! Download speed degrading

    Hi,

I am facing low download speed for a week now. The download speed doesnt go above 4kbs(torrent) and 7kbs(direct download). . I am from Pune. Is some one else also facing the same problem?

I used to get a decent download speed of 60-70kbs before that

    I have Home 500 plan.

Please let me if there is something that might be hampering my speed by this much amount.

    Thanks in advance.

in my opinion may be your windows firewall hampering the download speed of your internet and secondly check your phone line(dial tone) if there is some disturbance if it is then thats the main reason.
your download speed also depends upon how far you are living from your local exchange.

if you were getting good speeds before & you haven't changed anything in windows/modem then there may be some problems with your line/exchange.sometimes when bsnl does some upgradation/repairing work speeds go down for few days.check with other users in your area & if they are having same problem then it's definately bsnl's problem.

Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

    Shinigami,

I've been facing the exact same problem as you have, even with my ports forwarded from before.

After browsing some Torrent tutorials, I've realized the following and am in the stages of implementing/fixing each:

    1. Windows XP SP2 and SP3 may restrict TCP/IP ports, even with relevant ports being forwarded. This is called a half-open port and their number can be set in most torrent clients. Apparently there is a patch out there (search for it) that will take out this port restriction.
Note: I recently installed SP3 and only now started realizing that this may have affected my torrent speeds!:cursing:

    2. It is usually better to manually set maximum download/upload speeds in your torrent client. Not only that, but it probably also helps to manually set the max number of connections, peers per torrent, etc. (look up the outside tutorials on this)

    3. It JUST might help to enable outgoing encryption in your torrent client - dunno if this helps with BSNL, but better to be safe before they come cracking down on torrent users!

    Let us know your progress!

I have posted a guide and few links in the "Braodband How To" section.

The patch you want is a TCPIP.SYS patch.

Try using settings given by just4kix. Also turn on encryption and see if it helps.
