well just configure your modem for poppe connection type and connect the lan cabple to the RJ45 (Ethernet jack) of your laptop ... linux will automatically start your network linkup ... and you can then surf internet .. ! just check that your Ethernet drivers are installed properly if you have one ethernet jack then you will see it as named eth0 , in fact linux mostly installs the drivers itself as they are all in installation.

    or follow these steps

if you can try this instead to check what;s wrong
switch to terminal ctrl + alt + f1 enter the root as username and the root password . then type this
system-config-network. . this will show you your ethernet is instaled or not . if installed then hit enter on your ethernet name eth0 and then check if it should not have any DNS configurations . if there are any then set that to DHCP . automatically recieve ip.
    then ok > ok/quit.

    then type this ifup eth0.
    then type chkconfig network on
    then type service network restart.

i hope this will do away your problem.. to go back to gui terminal just hit ctrl + alt + f7

since your modem is (eth+usb) connect usb to windows and eth to linux.. just leave it to default network setting like automatically receive ip(as angelofdeath said).
