Post 3 Tips To Significantly Speed Up BSNL Dataone Broadband Connection

Tip 1: One of the major problems with BSNL Dataone Broadband connection is the DNS servers they provide by default. Most of the time they are very slow and sometimes they fail to respond. I noticed that I am starting to spend a significant amount of time in DNS resolution with Dataone connection, often it is larger than the time it takes to actually get the reponse. Here is a simple solution to significantly speed up your DNS resolution.

Open up the network connection profile and edit TCP/IP settings. In the DNS server address fields, specify the following DNS server addresses: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
Disconnect the connection and then connect again. You are done.

This specifies third party DNS servers which are significantly faster than BSNL Dataone’s DNS servers.

Note: The service is provided by OpenDNS.

Tip 2: Firefox users can use FlashBlock extension to prevent downloading of Flash content by default, thereby significantly speeding up browsing experience. You can click on the placeholder icon to display the original Flash content any time. This is more of a passive tip in that reduces data usage to improve your overall experience.

Tip 3: You can try to increase your broadband bandwidth tweaking the TCP/IP parameters. The process is simplified by using TCPOptimizer, a free tool. It helped me, your mileage may vary.

Hey can we really use a third party DNS in place of BSNL's.
Cos even if u use Open DNS as the service provider is BSNL it has to go through the ISP DNS to resolve it to Open DNS and then Open DNS will do the rest ......i may be wrong please correct in that case.

you do not enter opendns as service provider but the server addresses of opendns(208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220).your request for resolving sites names now go to these servers instead of bsnl.

OOps sorry i didnt mean that ..actually ....i meant that using Open DNS server address in place of BSNL's server addresses .......
Sorry it was clear in my mind what to write but something else got typed...
Anyways am i correct with this that Open DNS will get preference after BSNL's DNS addresse cos as BSNL is providing the line their server comes first?

if you set the open dns server as preferred dns server then it will be given priority.

Just a side note: OpenDNS settings should be set in the ADSL modem router and not on your PC LANs TCP/IP settings.

Hmmmmm well i dont know technically but if we think logically then we must apply the server addresses on to the modem....
Cos its the modem that eventually dials to the network hence resolution on the network will take place on the modem end and not on the PC end....
    What say guys?Correct or Incorrect?

if you use pppoe mode in which modem dials DNS servers must be put in modem.if you are using bridge mode in which windows dials put these in TCP/IP properties.

i only manage to download 2.5GB during free time(2-8AM) as due to power cut from 5-7:35AM.however i am happy because when i was completing my degree i used my institute's 34mbps line to download with a speeds of 2000-3000KBps & downloaded 800GB in 8weeks.
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

sir i checked the summary in the router settings
before changing only tcp/ip settings and not router they showed the dns addresses diff but changing inside the router made the change showed in summary.
so sir what do u conclude from this?

    hello cmkannan,
Firstly forget about the SIR ok.. We're all friends here.. If you change your DNS servers in your tcp/ip your pc will use those DNS servers itself even though some other DNS servers are mentioned in the router's summary page.Since you have defined it manually it will use the tcp/ip dns servers itself.BOth are fine. you could even set the DNS in the router and in tcp/ip set it to automatically assign DNS .. same thing!!!
