Default Modem Downloads data even after the coputer shuts down...

    Hi guys...

for night browsing i started my connection at around 2:5 am and put some files for download...

and i used Turnoffmaster to shut down my computer at 7:48 am.....

i woke up at 7:55 am and my computer shut down....but i forgot to turn my modem off....but when i remembered about the modem it was 8:28 am so i went and turned it off....

when i checked my usage i was surprised to find that it has downloaded around 128 MB of data from 8:00 am till 8:28 am....

is there something wrong with BSNL...or did i do something wrong??

Is your modem configured in PPPoE mode? The modem continuosly exchages data with the BSNL DSLAM server to keep the connection alive in PPPoE mode.

just change the connection type from pppoe to bridge then you have to connect using windows after you turn on the modem.however in bridge mode all traffic comes directly to your computer on all ports & hence use a good firewall.

if you can open your modem configuration page(usually 192.168.1.1 type this in your web browser & you will be asked for username & password.post your modem model here if you don't know this or you can simply google by looking for,say,"ut300rtu default password").in connections settings look for some connection like _0_35_ & click on edit & just change connection type from pppoe to bridge with rest of the settings same as now.

Bridge has its advantages and disadvantages and so is the case with PPPoE. Just because you forgot to switch off the modem does not mean that you should switch from PPPoE to Bridge.

Also if you are a novice, I will not advise you to tinker with your ADSL modem settings.

Setup your electrical connections like this:

Mains --> UPS --> Multi-socket board cum spike buster --> All computer connections, ADSL modem, Wi-Fi router, printer, etc.

Then if you just switch off the Mains or UPS you are all set. This is exactly what I do.

still just4kix,i don't get it how a modem can be able to download 128mb if the computer is off because if the incoming data is not being saved continuously in some location then traffic should stop.

Yes. That is suspicious. I could understand 20-50 KB but not 128 MB.

when you shut down your computer check if your computer's power & hdd LED are off or blinking.also listen carefully for any noise coming from computer cabinet.

    Hii,,

    It also happens to me.

Even after the computer shuts down some data still come [incoming signals] to the modem. These data packets are the responses to the previous [before shutting down] queries. This will continue until the Time to Live [ttl] value of the last packet expires. Some data will flow outwards also. This was stored in the buffer of our modem before System Shutdown. For this outward queries, automatically some answers will come. This will be killed because of no application program is receiving that data.

But there is no logic for 128 MB !!

i also thought of modem's buffer but it can not possibly hold MB let alone 128MB that's why i posted about confirming the computer's shutdown.i suspect that computer wasn't shutdown properly.

get your portal ID as soon as possible.then verify that this data leakage is in bsnl records too.if not then no need to worry.

    Question Broadband night usage help

Hi all, I am new to this indiabroadband and learning a lot from posts, threads and replies from you all. Thank you for it.

I use bsnl 500c plan where night 2:00 AM to 8:00 AM is free. I have 4 Questions.

    (1)
I enabled scheduler to autoshut down my windows at 7:59 AM, but forgot to switch off my modem (ADSL 2+ router). I then switched it off some 15 minutes latter (8:15 AM). The usage reports of dataone .in says I have used some 128 MB (approx) during the 2:00 -8:15 AM session

Even if ttl (time to live) of data packets are taken into account how 128 MB is used up. Its shocking. Any answers friends?

    (2)
Is using the tool from Imran's Broadband Helper Utility" for Managing the "free usage time" a solution

    (3)
or the scripts available in the title "Automatic rebooting of router at 2 AM and 8 AM" a solution?

    (4)
Also another one question that intrigues my mind is , if I leave my PC and modem in on condition say form 10:00 PM to morning 8:00 AM, and put all the downloadable thing in download manager which starts working from only 2:03 AM (I hav configuired in the download manager) and if I see the reports at morning, it says some 70-130 MB used up during the free time. How this is happening?
