    Angry Broadband acting like Dial-up

Hi, I think I'm not getting a good speed. My download manager reports speeds around 28 kB/s. Is it anywhere near the speed claimed by BSNL(256 kbps)? It took me 7 hours to download a 685 MB iso (http protocol). Is the speed less than normal? What can I do to increase it? Will contacting BSNL cc do any help ?

    Hi google spider,

your Broadband is not acting like a dial-up... it is still broadband..... you are confused between kilobyte(KB) and kilobits(kb).... the speed promised by BSNL is 256kbps i.e 32kBps (1 kilobyte = 8 kilobits)..... so you are getting close to promised speed.

If you want higher speed..... go for Home 500 or Home 500c or Home500c+.... then you will get (under ideal condition) close to 2mbps i.e 256kBps and u can download 700mB iso in ~40 minutes.

Well 40 min seems to be an exaggerated value.....its never that fast ......but definitely u will require less time than 7 hours......

Also it depends on through which medium ur downloading .......if its through peers ..then u can get huge speeds ...resulting in downloads ...less than an hour for 700mb ....but still depends on the seeds and peers available.

some users like tanmay are getting around 3mbps & that's why they can download 935MB in 1 hour.i can not get even full 2mbps because my line attn is 29 as i am about 2km from exchange.still 800MB in 1 hour is enough for me if only power cut in my area would not be there from 4-8AM.

    @whitestar_999,

I don't think that line attn is the cause because your line attn is better than mine(my attn=32.0 db).

Are you with ip 59.xxx.xxx.xxx or 117.xxx.xxx.xxx....?

    i am on 117.xxx.xxx.xxx

Speed all depends on how close you are located towards your telephone exchange and how many of them are using the broadband in your location. But you can increase the torrent speed by opening it up.

@tanmay,i am a new user with IP 117.x.x.x.where are you from because it seems that users especially in south india(more specifically kerala)are getting speeds around 3mbps.can you post a screenshot of your modem's status page where downstream & upstream rates are mentioned or just post the values.also the modem is it provided by bsnl or bought from market.

    Hi whitestar,

i am from bhopal, Madya pradesh.... my line stats are as foloows:-

    while using ADSL2+ mode:-

    and while using G.DMT:-

since my snr margin is low in ADSL2+ mode, i am using modem in G.dmt

Wink For Torrent speed will be like dial up

Hey u are downloading a torrent file. If u proper know what is a torrent u might be known that there are Seeds. That means suppose if u download a 1 MB file, ur computer acts as a Seed and transmits that file to another computer. So if in case the torrent u are downloading is seeded by slow connection users, u will get slow speed. if seeds are at high speed connection u will get fast speed.

i am using G.dmt mode too & my modem is siemens.but my downstream & upstream rate are 2048kbps & 512kbps respectively.i guess you are connected to newer machinery at your local exchange which is configured for higher speeds.is your modem bsnl provided?

i have 2 modems Beetel 200BX and ZTE831AII(provided by bsnl)... i am currently using Zte zxdsl 831II because it is giving higher SNR values {at ADSL2+ auto.... (don't know how but it is unstable at G.DMT and works great on ADSL+ auto) } and it is under 1 year warranty too.

(whereas as in screenshot beetel works much -2 better in G.DMT than ADSL2+)

Both modems are giving me Same gr8 speed and i can download about 935 MB in 1 hour with both of them.

great for you.i can download 800MB in an hour.i guess my city is a samll one so i think local exchange here don't have the newer machinery/increased speeds.
