there is virus in the system. I scanned and quarantined all the files. It is xp home edition so i tried to update it to sp2. It just stopped in the middle saying something like not enough memory(the virus). Scanned with avg again. I have a downloaded copy of sp3 which i tried to install later , in the middle due to power cut installation didnt finish, from then on xp just restarts at logo screen even in safe mode.

I installed virtual box and running xp in it. Nlite displays a message it is a preinstallation software and cannot be used to repair installed windows.I can customize a xp installation cd but cant change what is installed.

1.Try to boot to safe mode,
2.if it boots ,go to system restore(Start Menu\Accessories\System Tools>system restore),
3.Select a restore point before instaling SP.

might help,if it doesn't then, try "erd commander",you'll need to create a bootable CD from erd commander
Only problem is erd commander doesn't recognize some systems,if you are lucky then it might work for you.

There are a million combinations for a computer system. So I am just guessing some common things.

When did I tell you that you need to create windowes bootable CD from "erd commander"?

"erd" comes with bootable image. It itself is bootable, you don't need windows for it.
Just burn the "erd disc image" to a CD.
Then put it in your optical drive and boot from it.

It has almost the same interrface as windows xp.

You have to take some risk if you want to learn. If you are afraid of data loss, then first back them up with "symantec recovery disc"(also a bootable tool for back up) or "erd commander".

For full format data recovery use "ontrack".

I believe your file system is corrupt or some system files are mising. There cannot be any other cause for this kind of behavior. So either way even if you repair windows,it won't survive long.Windows is not that efficient.

It is world's most popular buggy software, and you can't live without it.

Thanks for all the help. Now my windows is working. This is what i did

I just copied as many files i can from system32 folder of virtual xp to system32 folder of my xp.
When i started xp it gave me error saying ,"some programing preventing from accurately validating/identifying your system", or something like that.
I tried to boot to safe mode and it worked. Removed the service pack and reinstalled
    it.
Now windows is working but i dont know if it will cause any problems in future and while running some of the programmes.
Avg detected the change in some files.

I like to take risk to learn but only if it is the last or only option.Sorry for the ignorance about erd commander may be i should have read more clearly about it.

The problem is most likely due to incomplete installation of service packs. It gave me a message my system might get unstable if i shut down my computer but i could do nothing. I had to shutdown due to powerloss.

That was before i had this problem. I had reinstalled windows, I didnt know about reinstalling grub and just reinstalled ubuntu again (but this time i did this well).
And currently we are discussing the problem i have got later.

I just didnt wanted to reinstall everything within few days.It would be my third installation in a week's time if i reinstalled windows.

    Haven't you enabled hibernation?
Then you didn't have to shutdown, just hibernate and the system continues from where it stopped.I had the same powerloss problem and hibernation worked for me.
