Default setting openDNS in ZTE ZXDSL 831AII modem

    hello !!

I am using ZTE ZXDSL modem (model 831AII) supplied by BSNL. The modem setting were set up by BSNL staff on 29.03.2008.
Instead of using BSNL DNS servers, I want to use openDNS servers. This was suggested in this forum.
On connecting to modem by http://192.168.1.1 ,I find in modem overview page, following settings :

    Model No ZXDSL 831AII
    Chipset Part No ZXDSL 831AIIV1.0.1i_D18_IN
    Chipset Version No E.37.7.37
    ADSL Port Enabled
    Downstream Line Rate 0 kbps
    Upstream Line Rate 0 kbps
    LAN IP Address 192.168.1.1
    Default Gateway not currently set
Primary DNS Server not currently set
Secondary DNS Server not currently set
    Firmware Version ZXDSL 831AIIV1.0.1i_D18_IN
    MAC Address 00:19:C6:84:65:CC
    System Up Time 00:01:51s

I am not able to locate any page where I can change DNS server setting. If I put openDNS server IP in LAN card configuration -TCP/IP
.then I am not able to access internet and I have to change LAN card setting back to :
    obtain DNS automatically.

I shall be grateful for tips on how to change DNS servers from BSNL DNS servers ,automatically assigned to openDNS servers.

have you tried searching in the opendns site itself?they have good tutorials.. OpenDNS | Providing A Safer And Faster Internet and usually if you set the DNS manually in tcp/ip it should work fine.. unless some firewall problem..

Change the DNS from TCP IP
Right Click on the Connection (LAN through which u r connecting)
Locate TCP/IP Settings and change the DNS there.

Question setting openDNS in ZXDSL 831AII modem

I have already tried it .It does not work. It seems the ZXDSL 831AII modem is pre-configured to give DNS,TCP/IP address to PC. IF I change DNS address in LAN card setting, I am not able to access internet. Does anyone else have ZXDSL 831AII modem and is facing same problem. There does not appear to be any option in ZXDSL modem configuration pages for setting DNS IP addresses.

Here BSNL is supplying only this modem as Type -I modem. Some of my other friends are also having same problems. BSNL DNS servers are slow and frequently have problems. That is why I would like to use openDNS.

I am also having a local cable ISP connection which I had had subscribed before BSNL installation . There I had no problem in setting openDNS
servers as DNS servers in lan card settings.

Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Are you using Bridge Mode (Like Dial-Up) ?
If so then you don't need to Port-Forward and you may not find the option in router page.

Why do you want to change the setting, if you are not facing any problems ?

    @Archer
efficiently optimize my internet connection, i read OpenDNS would make the connection faster,as the browser could resolve the host name more quickly than DNS address which BSNL provides, port forwarding optimizes ur internet speed

what i meant from not facing any problems is that my internet connection works fine, if i can optimize the limited speed i have it would be better..

Since you say you are a novice
No point in posting different MODEM. pages
If it is working fine, and you have no problem, in
    getting connected to Internet.

Take screen shots of ALL the pages with PRESENT SETTINGS

Then revert to your original query about
PORT forwarding ,try and give feedback.
( all settings change under Advanced options )
    See Post NO 7.

Usually, the ISP sets the modem, in the beginning
and demonstrates a connection to Internet.

After that speed low/ torrents download speed/
web sites not opening/Intermittent connections etc
are discussed here to help all users.

Because CC may not agree to attend
to these faults again and again. .
    And you must be
prepared to try and learn/ simple tweaks to the modem/and computer.

    1. OpenDNS will not increase connection speed. But only the website loading speed. And for some it slows down connection instead of speeding up.

    2. Port-Forwarding is useful for increasing Bit-torrent speed.

If you have a good Firewall like Zone Alarm then, change the connection to Bridge mode. This will make it easy to use OpenDNS and also you won't need to Port-Forward as it's already open in Bridge mode.

    Dont post all screen shots.
That is for your use, if you
by any chance loose Internet connection !

You can do it, by trial and error, and read the
    user guides again.
Check here. Post only the page for PF settings.
    Open Port Check Tool

I posted for Beetel 220BX uttorrents PF details
here in this forum or elsewhere recently.
    please check.

You MUST enable DHCP server option to enter DNS servers. Here it goes:
Advanced > LAN (where Router Local IP is mentioned): check the "Enabled DHCP Server" radio option. you will get what you want.
    have fun
