Hello friends, my xp is not booting but the linux on the same HDD is booting. It just comes till boot screen but the the blue screen shows up and PC restarts.Safe mode and last known good configuration don't work. The repair mode also does not work.

    my system spec:
    AMD 64 Athlon 2800+
    2.5 GB DDR400
    80+250GB SATA-20GB IDE
    VAI chipset
(RAID driver needed to detect SATA)
(rest of the hardware doesnot matter)

I have a back up image of my windows(on 250GB SATA) which I can easily paste on to my 80GB(main HDD) and make it bootable, but I don't want to waste all the updates, I have done since my last install.

    Any suggestions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did u install any software/hardware lately? Coupled with necessary drivers? The error which u are mentioning occurs when an incompatible driver is being loaded and the system halts booting.

Or it could be case of a corrupt RAM module.

No,RAM is fine.I am using a LINUX 64 bit on the same HDD and I have also booted from 32 bit and 64 bit live DVDs.All of them work fine except windows.
My other windows on my 250GB is also giving the same problem sometimes, so I have stopped booting from the 250GB one to avoid partition corruption.

Infact I use LINUX for major portion of my work, but I don't find any problem .

Ok please do the following :

Boot into the recovery console using a bootable windows xp installation cd

Enter LISTSVC in the prompt. This command is used to list all available services and drivers on the PC. Current status of each service and driver will also be displayed

Once u find the erroneous driver, note down its exact name. Then type DISABLE driver_name to disable the mentioned driver from loading while booting.

U shall be able to boot into the PC successfully once u follow the steps jotted down.

Yes I know that but the system just stops while going to the command line repair screen after where it scans the HDDs in the system after pressing "R".

Well I didn't have the time to experiment anymore , so I have restored the partition from my old back up.Thank you for your valuable suggestions, love you all.

I am facing another problem now.
I was trying to boot backtrack from my external HDD.It was working fine until yesterday it started gving the error-"select proper boot device".
Note that I am able to boot the same copy of backtrack from my 1GB thumb drive.

Nice to know your previous problem has been solved.

So the boot device priority is set properly in the BIOS and still u get this message?

Well I am experienced enough not to do that mistake.
I think there is some problem with partition on my external HDD.

Do you think that if you set the partition as active in windows while booting backtrack(linux) from it will have anything to do with the problem ?

    Here is what I did,
create a FAT32 partition on my external drive,
    set it as active,
    extracted backtrack on to it,
    made it bootable.
used to work from pen drive and also working fine from external drive except from yesterday.

    ----------------------------------------------
    There is another problem.
While booting backtrack from thumb drive, the NTFS partitions on my IDE HDD were writable but the partitions on my SATA were mounted read only. Why?
    A hug for the answer.

    @puchu
*First Boot Device Priority, your USB HDD should be first
*Check if your HDD contains a Valid bootloader, sometimes it gets corrupted.
Use a Xp CD and logon to recovery console. type fixmbr, if that does not work try fixboot

    try and post results back
