Thread: BSNL Type IV or Wireless router

Hi,

I have a BSNL Type I modem which I'm using with my laptop. My phone connection and modem is in my bedroom. I want to go for a WiFi option so that I can browse from my living room. I do not have a telephone point in my living room.
Should I go for BSNL Type IV modem or should I go for a wireless router like Netgear, Linksys etc?
Will there be any difference in speed between the wireless option (BSNL Type IV or Wireless router) and wired option (connecting directly to the modem), considering that there will be couple of walls between my bedroom and livingroom.

internet speed wont make a difference.. but incase your trying to transfer files then definetly wired will be faster.. bsnl modems for 1800rs are quite good

Note that Wireless modems were designed with the Western houses in mind where there is more or wood and not thick RCC and bricks.

A solid brick wall impedes the wireless signal a lot based on the distance; not a big issue if the two wireless devices are on two sides of the wall but very near to the wall.

So whether you go for BSNL Type IV or aftermarket models, will not make that much difference. Placement/location of the wireless modem will be the key.

I think i'll go for BSNL Type 4 then as it would be cost effective.

BSNL Type I + router will cost me (1200 + 2000) = 3200/-
BSNL Type 4 will cost me 2000/-

I bought the BSNL Type 4 modem for 1873/- and the spped is excellent.. I use the modem in my bedroom. If I'm using the laptop in my bedroom then I get a speed of 54Mbps.. If I'm in the living room then I get around 25-30 Mbps.
So it is definitely greater than my broadband speed.

@aruncse30,the speeds he mentioned are those of LAN speeds not the broadband speeds.

thank god.. however we people are getting 100mbps right?? but he is saying he is getting faster than us...

i think he meant WLAN speed is greate than broadband speed

@aruncse30,max WLAN speeds are around 45mbps for 802.11g while normal LAN speeds begins from 100mbps.
