Well mr hot_guy, i will like to see u "more HOT" like red chilly when u get a huge bill from BSNL for not rebooting the modem at 02:00 AM - if so many peoples r saying abt this then why u can't believe on this (they don't do this daily but they can do this for a day when u hv downloaded the most). on that day plz don't come to this forum and say "What to do?".
if u don't want to use any s/w for modem reboot then there is no problem, but don't say modem reboot is not important.

Yes u can block many things using a good firewall, but afterall Viruses r Virus & Virus Programmers r generally more intillegent then OS Programmers, firewalls can't gurantee to block them (did u hear about rootkits-find them then say). lastly using firewalls for blocking, and disabling the connection itself can't be comparable.

try to block Windows "svchost" process by ur firewall, todays viruses works behind this.

its up to u to "IHateRapidshare" and wait:cursing: for a microsoft link, or download, scan, test & use whatever is available.

    Hello all,

Slightly going off topic and picking on the "IHateRapidshare" comment ... this is what I have experienced

    a) RS (guest access) allows only one download at a time
    b) the speed is restricted to 500 kbps (80+ KB/s)
    c) you cannot download any more files till the same minutes are past as the MB size of your last download, i.e., if you download 10 MB file, you have to wait another 10 minutes before you can download another file.
    d) the trick is to fool RS by changing your real IP address - this may be possible by rebooting the modem (tough luck for those with static IPs and shared static IPs like Wimax users)

The alternat is of course a RS Premium account. But you need to pay for the premium account and it is by no means cheap @ €55 (~INR 3200) per year. Even at €7 per month or INR 400+, I consider this expensive. Or don't you? This is why I don't like RS. RS is making money out of piracy - make now mistake about this. Oh yes! They state that you are not supposed to upload or download copyrighted stuff, etc., etc., and thus protect themselves.

My point is you are not getting anything free and most of you use RS to download free stuff. Somehow, I am saddened to think that people spend Rs. 400 for Rapidshare and Rs. 600+ for broadband every month but will not buy legal stuff.

I am of the opinion that movie studios are charging too much money for DVDs and they should be brought down. Indeed it is possible to bring down the price as Moser Baer has shown (read this thread: http://www.indiabroadband.net/bollyw...er-movies.html (Moser Baer Movies)).

@ hot_guy: it would be better for you to listen to just4kix and nethack!! They are very right! I myself was billed more, that is how i started making this program!!
and google for rootkits and botnet, it will take you no time to realize that your standard firewall is not much of a help!! :taz:

@ just4kix: very right, but i guess most ppl are happy downloading one file at a time, rather than not getting it at all!

@ nethack: kindly post links to your program "imrans.."

First thing BSNL is a Govt Agency, so don't be in a confusion that "MAKE IT GIGANTIC and then dump", u will have to dump the money to BSNL or spent some holiday in jail.

Second thing, have u tried to block all instance of "svchost" process, i bet u hav'nt tried, bcz whenever u try this u will find the "aukat" of Firewall.
Just after trying this, think if some virus is using the connection from this process can u still block that process.

This situation is very much similar to say that:-
u r an employee in a office, u have hired a gatekeeper and ordered him not to allow anyone to enter/exit thru that gate (gate is open), although the gatekeeper can do his duty honestly, but what about when the General Manager of company wants to pass thru that gate?
Did the GM needs ur permission?hmy:

Similarly OS processes did'nt need anyones permission.

Sorry i don't hv any doubt over Firewall but i know its limitations, i have asked u to do only two things
    1> learn abt rootkits.
    2> block "svchost" process.
    u have'nt done anything - i can bet.
Modem lights r not the only option to watch traffic, nor did the virus wait for u to show that it is using the open connection.

for u kind of people, i can only say "sun can rise from north" when u believe this without actually watching.

    Cool Update!

    Update!!

Now the program will automatically check for disconnections (power failure etc) and try to reconnect as soon as LAN is up again!!

So that you can sleep in peace while all your stuff is being downloaded over the night free scheme

Also, the connection occurs just after 10 seconds after disconnection. The delay was 2-3 minutes before, which was absolutely unnecessary!

Hope you like it.. Thanks for your feedback!

Get it at www [dot] shajul [dot] net

    /******************************

    Setup network

    1) Select TCP/IP properties
    (Control Panel->Network connections->Lan or High-speed internet->Double-click->Properties)

    and enter as follows

    Set ip Address As 192.168.1.29
    Subnet Mask As 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway As 192.168.1.1
    Preferred DNS 61.1.96.69
    Alternate DNS 61.1.96.71

    2) Save settings and restart the computer.

    3) Open your browser (preferably Internet Explorer ) and goto 192.168.1.1

    4) Input as follows
    USERNAME: admin
    PASSOWRD: admin

    5) Now goto Home->WAN Settings,
(This may differ in different modems, but u will be able to see a password field and the connection type will be PPPoE)

Important: before you change it, make sure you have the password! if not use a password revealer program to reveal the password. Some pages have frames, so u have to point towards the page with the password and not to the frames!!

PVC Number - PVC-0 (Or default connection, in some modems you will have to delete it and then create it again!)
Change Wan Type - RFC2684Bridged (Or just plain bridged)
    VPI/VCI - 0/35
    Encap. - LLC

    Apply and restart the modem.

    6) Now goto Control Panel-->Network Connections

Create New connection-->(and a wizard will pop up)
Connect to Internet(Select the radio button and click next)
Setup My connection Manually(select it and click next)
Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password
ISP name (type any name and click next)
Type in the Username and password given to you in the specified coloumns also select the other options if you want to
If you want to add a shortcut of connection to desktop, check that square box and click finish.
    >> Installation

    ********************************/

    Now i have some questions

1...why should i change my static ip address,in tcp/ip ..i actually use a different one

2..why should my connection require a username and password???

    Hi Shajul

Thanks for the software for Dataone night unlimited users. But before I try this software, I have a question. IP address of my modem is stored on the modem itself and so even when my computer is switched off, the boradbans remains always connected till I switch off the modem.

In such case also would this software work and will it be useful?

    Thanks

    Hi dc_vinoth,

I am also facing the same problem of excessive billing by BSNL for bband usage during nightunlimited plan. Can you please tell me how did you resolve this issue with BSNL to get your bill revised?

shajul, first of all great work! i didnt know such a problem existed until i read your post...

here are my suggestions to make your software even more useful.

    1. make the IP address changeable.
    2. instead of hard coding the time (connecting at 2 AM, disconnecting it at 8 AM),
let the user decide upon the time to connect and disconnect. The reasons are:

    a. hard coding it exactly as 2 AM is a bit risky because we cannot see BSNL's clock. so 2:00 on my computer could actually be 1:55 for BSNL which means i will be charged for the bytes .
the same argument can be made for the disconnection time too. and what if i want to connect at 4 AM only, eh?

    b. the s/w can be made more useful. ppl can use it for scheduled downloads.
