    Default Temporary Change of Modem

    Hello Friends,
I am using DATAONE BROADBAND Plan Home 500 on my PC. I have recently purchased a SONY VAIO laptop. Now my problem is that i have Type-I Modem(which supports only a single PC) and so i cannot use my PC and Laptop simultaneously. However, one of my friend has Type- II Modem(which has Wi-Fi). So, can i interchange my Modem with my friend (because my friend doesn't has a laptop) so that i can use internet on my laptop and PC simultaneously. Is it possible?? Is there any special setup or special device required for these or i can easily interchange the modem. I hope i am able to explain my query well.

    Thanks in advance

    Thanking you,

    With Warm Regards,
    Mitesh Puri

you can interchange the modem.but you do need to change some settings in the modem.. you will need to change bsnl account information in the WAN section of the modem

If your friend is willing to exchange the modem then sure you can go ahead and exchange them but only if you friend is also a BSNL subscriber.

I have heard unconfirmed reports that BSNL, Airtel, etc. make firmware changes in their modems so that they work with their own networks only. This ensures them that their clients have to buy equipment from them only and also it makes them think twice before switching.

In your case, if you exchange the modems, reset the modems after you get them and re-do your configuration/setup after reseting. I hope you know how to do the same (and your friend too).

An alternate but a rather expensive option is to buy a wireless router from the market. Although this will cost you, it will be a more or less one-time expense.

Thanks a lot for the help provided by India Broadband Members. I am really glad that i came across by chance to this forum. Cheers...!!

Anyways, one of my doubt is clear that i can exchange my modem with my friend. However, i would be really grateful if the members present here help me with the following things:
Once i exchange my Modem (Type - I )with my friend's modem (Type - II),
    1) What settings i have to make on my PC ??
    2) What settings i have to make on my Friends PC ??
    3) After succesfully installing my friend's modem on my PC, how can i connect my laptop with it(with the help of Wi-Fi)

A request to the members who are helping me
: I am a newbie and not a techie geek. So, please explain in simpler words so that i can easily understand, or preferrably by visual guide.

    Thanks a lot in advance.

    Regards,

I have written some visual guides for the modem/routers that I know of. You could use these guides as a reference (please note the word reference).
