| Platinum Member | first of all there is a difference between compulsory firmware upgrades & optional firmware upgrades.you have to choose whether its worth taking the risk.i said risk because firmware upgrades are not always smooth.to give you an example if you update your firmware for siemens c2110 modem with latest firmware you will not be able to configure the modem in bridge mode by using normal means.MT880 modem is a very old model i think & it was incapable of supporting the faster speeds by bsnl without major errors unless a firmware update is done.so in this case firmware update is necessary.

Rep Power: 1 | agreed that you need to make sure that the firmware which you are putting on you know the effect I am from a product life cycle company and i know how much affect goes into releasing a firmware all the testing and developing etc believe that if Siemens removed that feature in the latest firmware their would be a very strong reason behind it. i am not sure what it is nor would you but they would have found some thing which caused them to remove that feature and if they have removed it i would also remove it |

| Platinum Member | @gardencityboy,the main problem regarding modem firmwares like siemens here is that these are OEM models & firmware is designed as per bsnl's custom needs.for example ut300rtu modem comes with a firmware which does not have virtual server option while older models or those provided by mtnl does.maybe to deter ordinary users from using virtual server like options bsnl is ordering modems with custom firmwares which does not let users access many advanced features.a very clear example of this is new nokia siemens c2110 modem which is configured for pppoe mode by default & you can not use port forwarding on this modem.even configuring it in bridge mode requires a not so simple procedure.so if you decide to update firmware & later found out that you can't use port forwarding now what will you do.that is why i am advising everyone who does not have a more than 1.5-2 year old modem provided by bsnl not to update firmware unless absolutely necessary. |
