Exclamation Unable to use BSNL in PPPoE mode

hi,

If you guys can help me, I will be grateful to you guys. My problem is with my Dell Laptop that I got from UK. If I configure to use the PPPoE thing from the Laptop, i.e. dialup, it connects but then it will not load any page after a few packets/bytes of data. This works fine with my Desktop. But if I use the Modem's inbuilt PPPoE function, it works fine.

I recently brought a DSL wireless router which has to be connected to the ADSL modem for it to work. If I keep the BSNL modem on Bridge mode and Wireless router in PPPoE mode, the problem is seen. I have seen on many forums that this is not the recommended and everyone is using the BSNL modem as the router and Wireless router as a switch keeping the IP addresses of network adapters on static IP.

I am able to use my Laptop with the router but I don't understand why the PPPoe thing does not work from my Laptop? Is it because I got it in UK?

My hardware config:

BSNL modem: UT-300R2U
Wireless router: Netgear WGR614
Laptop: Dell Inspiron 1520
LAN card: Broadcom card
Wireless adapter: Inter ABG inbuilt

That's it, please help.

Thank you.

No, I am using Windows XP SP2. I had installed XP3 RC2 sometime back and it gave me a lot of problem, so I uninstalled it, can this be a problem? I have McAffee Security center installed on my Laptop and it restricts others PCs from seeing my Laptop on a network even after adding the local 192.168.1.x to trusted list of IP addresses.

Please help me. Thank you.

i got it ..............i think you are connecting your router with the BSNL modem with a straight cable...infact this wont work...you have to use a cross over cable to route your connection.

you see while buying a LAN cable you have two(i think) options whether to buy a straight cable( here straight cable means that the configuration of different wires which are inside main cable i.e red, blue, green etc is different) or buy a cross over cable in this cable the wires which are inside the main cable are joined to the clip(RJ45) in a cross type of manner

So i hope no problem in bridge mode configuration of modem and also i hope no fault in PPPOE configuration as you already did it in desktop. the same only u must be doing

So i hope no softwares in your laptop block internet traffic in LAN.

here u said 'you are able to use laptop with router'... why this contraversary or i misunderstood wrongly?

I think some softwares is doing additional job when enable PPPOE in laptop. so do as
a) donot connect router now
b) connect only modem and laptop
c) enable modem in bridge mode
d) check with PPPOE desktop whether it works fine
e) if desktop works fine,
f) then switch off mcaffee security center and firewalls if any in laptop
g) enable PPPOE in laptop (donot enable any special encryption/hashing algorithms)
h) check now

this is only an option we give, if u still not able to browse...let us kno

Thank you Player, I will check that when I disconnect from the net. But do you feel that this could be the problem as the same cable works with my desktop? I have heard that the BSNL modems work only with Realtek LAN cards, is this true?

I am able to use the Laptop with the router when it is used as a switch & BSNL modem as the router, else it times out after some time. I even checked the MTU settings and changed it, but to no avail.

I will try your suggestions when I am done with my work on the net.

Thank you.
