Rep Power: 2 | superprash, 1. how do i check if i have configured my modem to open dns? i read your blog on that and did exactly like you mentioned in the blog. but when i check the router page, it still shows a check mark in the enable automatic assigned dns box. does that mean that it has not worked? i changed my address to a static address following the guidelines from portforwarding.com so that i can port forward, but the name server entries as seen in the ipconfig command and router page are different from the ones i entered when i was configuring to open dns according to your blog. what is happening? if i try to reconfigure the router to open dns according to your blog, do i need to change the dns entry in the network connections in my computer also? what im asking is this...should the dns entries in the router, the network connections page and the ipconfig page be the same? 2. im currently in pppoe mode i think.does using the dmz mode to port forward pose significant risks? im on home plan 500 with oonly one comp. i got confused reading the earlier posts here regarding bridge vs pppoe for port forwarding. i read your blog on torrenting. my modem has no virtual server option, it has only dmz. will i end up with viruses if i use dmz? what do you suggest? im new to torrents and the internet. |

| Platinum Member | first of all i would like to tell you NO DOUBLE POSTING!!!! now coming to your queries... if you have only one computer forget about everything and just configure your modem to bridge mode, in this mode you dont have to do anything all the ports are already open in this setting and it is the best you can do to increase your speeds in torrents |

Rep Power: 5 | 1)Well some routers have the problem wherein if you type in the DNS servers manually it goes back to automatically get DNS by itself..So the alternative for this is to go to Control Panel->Network Connections->right click on local area connection and click on Properties and then click on tcp/ipv4 and type in the opendns ips there manually.. what ip did you enter in virtual server and what ip did you see in your ipconfig output? 2)If you have only the DMZ support then you gotta use it..I use it too..Just make sure you have a strong firewall..like zonealarm for example..Update antivirus regularly and you should be good to go!! |

Rep Power: 2 | superprash yesterday i tried reconfiguring the router ut300r2u to open dns once again. i followed all the steps. after i clicked save, i went to the management page and clicked on reboot. the modem rebooted and then after that i was not able to connect to the internet. the green internet light went off although the dsl light was on. I had to reset the router and then somehow managed to connect again though i still don't know how it connected. i tried setting up pppoe mode again and thats how i reconnected i guess. Now everything is as it was before. the dns entries in the ipconfig box and in the router are the same and the ip address is set to static. but its not the numbers of open dns and the router page still shows the assign dns automatic as checked. i had entered the dns numbers of open dns in the router the first time, but guess i forgot to click reboot. the second time i did it correctly, but after rebooting lost the connection. why did i lose the connection when i changed the dns to manual and put the open dns numbers in that box and clicked reboot? after configuring open dns in the router should i change the same in the tcp page also in network connections? im scared to do it as i burnt my fingers doing this yesterday losing the connection in the process. i really struggled to get the connection back. what is igmp and Qos in the wan setting of the router? it is disabled in my router. |

Rep Power: 5 | as i said.. ut300r2u has some problem.. another user also complained saying that whenever he used to try saving DNS info on his router the modem used to reset...The best thing is in the tcp/ip properties set dns ips to 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 .. then you will be using opendns.. NAT - basically used for forwarding traffic, wherein all ports are open!! |

Rep Power: 2 | I lost the connection to the internet after tweaking with the modem settings and then reset the modem ut300r2u,and somehow reconfigured. My internet download and browsing speeds and limewire download speeds have reduced to 10-20-30 kBps whereas earlier it used to be upto 200kB. Pages take a long time to load. My TCP/Ip address settings are set to static as it was before and so is the DNS. Could someone tell me what could be the problem? I cant figure out what it is. Can the monsoons affect the internet speed? here the monsoon started 3 days ago..in kerala. Somebody please help me. |

Rep Power: 0 | open http://192.168.1.1/main.html click on advance setting or tab or whatever............ click NAT>> Virtual Servers>> virtual server is under nat option..... now click add.....and give a custom name(server)......any name and select a port between 50000-60000 and enter that same specific port in all the categories..viz external port end, external port start, internal port start, internal port end..... and select TCP/UDP in the protocol category. now u should check ur IP address by typing start>run> then type command in the box and then ipconfig/all start>run>command>ipconfig/all here you can find the IP address of ur computer( lan IP) enter the IP that is seen above subnet mask(in the dos window).... in that virtual server option..........i said before....in your router page.... one thing is that..you dont need static external IP....ie the WAN IP provided by your ISP...........you only need a staic internal IP...ie LAN IP...ie the IP provided to your computer by the router.......... if u see the ame ip coming up everytime you try ipconfig...... u have a static internal IP...ie case solved........ otherwise you have to go to 192.168.1.1 select LAN.........disable "DHCP" now in your windows........network propeties you can find this at start>settings>control panel>network and then select TCP/IP D-link DFE-520X PCI fast ethernet adapter the above line after TCP/IP must be different if ur using a different LAN card and not D-link......... here select specific IP address... and give and IP between 192.168.1.2- 192.168.1.254 for eg use 192.168.1.3 i hope this solves ur dought |
