    Default BSNL broadband connection problem

Friends, this is my first post in this forum.
Unfortunately my experience is not good with BSNL broadband since when I got the connection during November-2007. When I changed 250plan to 500 combo, I got my bill of 11K during December and additionally 13K during January-2008. I gave complaints for both and got the feedback as my night usage is not considered and gone for billing. My account usage is till now not available even after constant follow up. I am told that there are lot of such issues and will be sorted out soon.
15days back my connection got stopped working and the error was 678. I lodged the complaint and referred to local exchange. The lineman struggled with 3-new modems, (my original modem was d-link) and finally could locate that there is some problem at server activation. At main broadband complaint office I was told that there is some problem in activating the account and is referred to Bangalore. As per them, their server is slow in diagnosing the fault and hence the username and password are to be reset at Bangalore office.

First, I am not understanding that why I get error 678 for D-link modem and error 691 for other modem (BSNL)? Pinging the server (61.1.96.96) with D-link won't work. Pinding D-link (192.168.1.1) is o.k. I have not tried pinging the server using BSNL modem, shall have to try again. I am using D-link modem with PPPoE mode.

Has anybody faced the same problem at anytime? What checks I can carry out to check the entire system? I have checked my laptop with other connection (old BSNL BB connection) and found working normally.

It is confirmed that my connection is active and not disconnected because of pending payment issues. In that case, what is that "INACTIVE" state in my connection?

I have talked upto GM(Telecom) Visakhapatnam . So, I don't think any other hierarchy would help me further.

Hope I get some useful information from you all. Regards.

BSNL users fall into two categories only - with good exp and extremely bad exp. Usually the people with good experience are those in major cities and tier 2 cities. People in the smaller towns have had bad experiences - mainly because of lack of manpower and infrastructure. Vishakhapatnam is a major twon and you should not be getting this exp.

Your problem is with your account and the account settings are managed at NIB servers in Bangalore. Unfortunately there is not much anyone can advise except to follow up, chase up, etc.

Overbilling cases have been heard quite often. But usually these are re-solved. Today in Pune's papers, a case has been reported about a bill of Rs. 1.43 lakhs being slapped on a dataone user.

If your case is not amicably sorted out, you should do the following:

    a) Please keep all documentation with you in writing - complaints, requests, reports, etc. with a "RECEIVED" signature/stamp from the BSNL office.
    b) File a case in consumer court if there is no redressal
    c) Switch to other ISP's (such as Airtel) if that is an option.

just4kix, thanks for your reply. I am still hopeful that the connection gets rectified with continuous follow up. Shall wait for some more time and take decision whether to disconnect or not. any other test possible to further confirm that the problem is only at the server? I am not given any clear reason by BSNL personnel what has happened actually. Regards.

Yesterday I got the information that there is some problem in the connection at server side. I am told that a temporary new connection is being arranged ( I am in Home unlimited plan). It takes 1-2 days to complete the additional part. I am still not getting the exact problem even from BSNL personnel what exactly has gone wrong and where. How a connection can go wrong (not the line problem) at the server side? Any inputs in this part?

Lots of things could go wrong - as Murphy states, 'When something can go wrong, it will'.

Whatever is wrong is with the account configuration at BSNL end. But any guesses would be pure speculation. Only someone who has worked in BSNL (BB side) can answer this question.

J4K, thanks a lot for your interaction. Finally I got my connection back in the evening. As per BSNL, total connection was rearranged as if it is a new one. My old account is closed now at their end. Still it is a mystery that what had actually gone wrong. If such problem occurs repeatedly for other users too, will BSNL arrange a new connection each time? Well, that's something which we should not rise again and again as it is purely an imaginary statement.
    Some unclarified doubts,
    1. Why server was not pinging when the connection was through upto their end? This is only from D-link modem. I was missing PPPoE signal when the connection was lost.
    2. I am given a new address (218.248.240.23) for "preferred DNS server". Old was 61.1.96.69 . Any information on this?

Thanks all for viewing and particapting in the thread.

well i guess thats their new DNS server.. although its better to use opendns servers 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 .. cause BSNL servers act whacky sometimes

Superprash, one more mystery is that, why error 678 (server no responding) for D-link and error 691 (wrong user name or password) with BSNL modem? Any informaion or link about setting up a broad band connection? Sorry for the ignorance. Regards.

there are two ways of setting up a broadband connection
1)Bridged mode- dialer in windows required
2)PPoe Mode - no dialer required.internet works as soon as you switch on your modem..

which way would you like to have it/

Superprash, I think you are almost to the point. I am using PPPoE setting of D-Link modem. I am least bothered about the usage as it is an unlimited connection. Any advantage/disadvantage between the two? I have not used the bridge configuration so far. But, why different errors? Regards, Adiseshanaik

both have their own advantages and disadvantages.. if you are comfortable with PPoE then stick to it..Different errors..if you are sure you are entering the correct username/password.. then the second error could be meaningful it maybe some problem communicating with bsnl side..
