Default How MTU Value Effects Net Speed

Would any one please let me know what is MTU (MAXIMUM TRANSMISSION UNIT)? and how it effects our NEt Connection if we change its values..

What is the Default DATAONE MTU for Dlink ADSL2+ Modem?

What should be the actual MTU to get the best from the DATAONE?

Which operating system are you using?

If its a newer windows like xp or vista then you dont really need to touch the MTU thing atall.

You can do a test if you need to change MTU or not : SpeedGuide.net :: TCP Optimizer / Downloads
Run the tcp/ip analyzer and see if it suggests a change in the MTU value.

    Thanks

MTU don't affect download speed as much as it affects sites opening.many users confirmed that only after lowering the MTU they succeeded in opening certain sites & send attachments in mail using outlook.

Sorry I missed your question there..

MTU means the size of each packet that is transmitted at one go.. if you set it too low then it increases the overhead too much and if you set it too high then for instance there is an error in transmitting a packet then it is retransmitted hence increasing your bandwidth usage in the long run.. if MTU is set too high then there is also a possibility that your pages will take ages to load and same with too less a value so it has to be at an optimum level which is normally prescribed by your isp.

Most isp's have it set at 1500 these days... but you can fiddle around and see what gives you the best result.

As I have read in your previous posts you run a cuber cafe so I suggest you keep it a little on the lower side as you must be using a few switches and routers in between which causes drops in packets at high temperatures and also when the traffic is high.

Hope I was able to explain it do shout if I missed something.
