Rep Power: 0 | Hey ppl, I'm currently using dataone broadband 500 plan here in chennai but as now i've bought myself an ipod touch and laptop soon to come, i want to change my broadband to wifi.... I've been using broadband on my comp. so the question goes like this.... Do i need additional hardware(router or ethernet, whatever that is) for my comp to access the wifi??(bought it when wifi didn't exist) Would it be reliable to purchase the wifi modem from bsnl themselves or is the speed better off with a wifi modem from the market??(talking about SPEEEED) And what is the difference between type 1, type 2, type 3, type 4 modem that bsnl offers?? Thanx in advance |

| Platinum Member | If your desktop motherboard has inbuilt wi-fi then you dont need to buy additional hardware and now adays most of the laptops has inbuilt wi-fi so you dont need to buy additional hardware purchasing modems from BSNL is really a steal deal for those prices i.e. 1200/1800 you cant get any modem in this price range i bet! and let me clear something speed does not depends upon which router/modem you have but it depends on how much bandwidth you have the basic difference in type 1,2,3,& 4 modems are type1 & 3 are not wi-fi they have only LAN & USB ports for connectivity type 2 & 4 supports wi-fi and LAN ports i would suggest you should buy the type 4 one which costs rs 1800/- its really a steal deal and all these modems are ADSL modems with inbuilt router

Rep Power: 2 | absolutely correct!!Bsnl wifi modems are pretty affordable and you can go for it!!!Mostly you might need to get an extra wifi PCI card incase your motherboard doesnt support one.. i guess very few high end motherboards come with inbuilt wifi card
