Red face Port Forwarding in UT300R2U/ADSL2+ modem....

Im using the BSNL 750UL plan.. My utorrent shows the yrllow exclamation mark in the bottom.. I know Port forwarding solves the problem.. But i dont have the 'Virtual server' in the 'Advanced setup' option.. Some say that using DMZ will solve the problem. But im afraid to do so, since its dangerous.. Im using windows Firewall and AVast Antivirus.. What are the settings should i change, if i were to use DMZ option no other go.. Will my utorrent will show green symbol if i use DMZ??

But from the 'Port Forwarding' Site i have snapshoted all my modem web pages and asked for their help in the 'Add a Router' option provided by them.. Should i wait??

Yes. Putting the server in DMZ is dangerous. This will open your computer to all the world on ALL ports (including Telnet Port 23 and FTP Port 21).

    You have the following options:

    1. You can add another router to your network: You can buy a good (wireless) router such as from Netgear or Linksys. BSNL has played spoiler and has disabled the 'Virtual Server' option in the firmware of their new UT-300R2U modems. But a standard router purchased from the market will have port-forwarding and port triggering options. So do this
    - Connect new (wireless) router in between UT-300R2U and PC
    - Next configure your existing UT-300R2U in bridge mode (all ports are open in bridge mode).
    - configure new (wireless) router in PPPoE mode and enable Port Forwading on this router. PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall should tell you how.

Cost of this option: Rs. 3000 approximately or the cost of new (wireless) router.

    2. Use two computers: If you have two computers you can connect them to UT-300R2U.
    - The NAT-DMZ option allows only one computer to be placed in DMZ.
    - If you have two computers, you can then place it in DMZ; the other will still be inside the local (router) firewall
    - The computer in DMZ should be exclusively used for Torrents and other such downloads; Never use this computer for internet browsing and absolutely no banking/other internet transactions.
    - The second computer that is outside the DMZ and inside the local (router) firewall is absolutely safe and can be used for everything else.

Cost of this option: The cost of the extra computer. This is NIL if you already have one but for torrent downloading you can buy a second hand computer; it need not be powerfull as downloading depends upon internet speeds only and is way-way slower than even the 1st generation Pentium or x486.

well if you are unable to purchase another router.. then stick with NAT-DMZ and install a strong software firewall in your pc!!!Yes the NAT-DMZ will give the green symbol in utorrent!!

normally even if you select DHCP it doesnt change everytime.. although if it does for you.. you could switch to static local ip.. zonealarm is a good firewall..comodo also is good..Downloading speeds will remain same..

since you asked windows firewall is the weakest firewall available.i would say the best firewalls are 100 times better than windows firewall.

Should i turn my Windows firewall OFF before installing another, or if i should uninstall, i dunno how to.. Im using Avast Antivirus.. is that enough..

Why im soo concerned is i don wannna format my PC for the 7th time

two firewalls are same as 2 antivirus never a good idea.you should turn off your windows firewall before installing another.most probably the other firewall you will install will give a warning if windows firewall is still on.

It means that your "port is not forwarded", which will result in lesser downloading speed for torrents. You will have to do "port forwarding". Go to portforward.com and search for your router in their list and follow the instructions.
