Well, when I had applied for the DataOne services... I was a bit apprehensive about such cheap broadband. But it never hurts to give anything a try. So be it. They took a while to come to my home and set the thing up (a while implies more than 20 days!). But to my surprise the wait was worth it!
The connection speed was awesome, it hardly took a second to connect... I could connect 24-7.
But, (don’t go and get a connection for yourself yet - read the whole story) all good things come to an end (I’m not saying that this is the end of DataOne, read along). The end of my pleasures came around soon... they started giving out connection for free (it seems to weed out all the ISP’s from the Indian market. This free service was on a trial basis for 3 months (I wasn’t jealous that people were getting for free what I had paid for, that is completely wrong).
This was beginning of all the troubles for me. The increased number of subscribers due to the free service seemed to have clogged their servers or something... now it was taking upto 10 seconds to authenticate my PC onto the network. No problems yet. 10 seconds isn’t all that bad (It hardly took a second in the early days!) A couple of weeks down the line.... the connection speed goes down.. I am connected at somewhere 100kbps instead of the promised speed of 256kbps. Not that big a problem yet, who needs all that band width (I am just a user at home)
Add a couple of more weeks to the time and here I am... not even being able to connect to the internet! The ADSL line isn’t coming on! And that is a problem. Adding to my woes is the fact that there is no customer service for DataOne in Ranchi....
And today is when I can finally connect.... after about 15 days of lost connectivity.
Conclusion: You should use this service if your life / income or whatever that matters doesn’t depend on it. Because at times the service is mind blowing and at time it is mind boggling. The service is good but it is an unreliable one. All the best.
