Default Bandwidth = Dowlnload + Upload?

    Hi

It the bandwidth specified by BSNL (256 kbps to 2 Mbps) the sum of the download speed plus upload speeds?

Reason I'm asking is that when downloading from torrents I consistently get download speeds of around 300 kbps and also upload speeds of around 250 kbps (no kidding - I checked many times in uTorrent ). So is my bandwith usage 300 kpbs / 2048 or (300+250) kpbs / 2048 ?

When BSNL says your speed is 256kbps up to a max of 2mbps they mean that you will get a minimum of 256kbps download speed and they will try to provide you speeds upto 2mbps on a best effort basis.

Your guranteed speed is 256kbps which is purely download speed.. this measure of speed doesnt keep your upload speed into account.

Which plan are you using? I hope you are keeping track of your usage if its a limited bandwidth account or else you will get a huge bill.

    Thanks

2mbps means 256KBps & utorrent shows speed in KBps usually so you are getting download speed 300KBps or 300Kbps.

Thanx for the confirmation - that rubs in the fact that my connection is quite pathetic as I get an average of around 300 kbps of a possible 2048 kbps (2Mbps).

    I am on Home 500 C (256 guaranteed (sic)) to max 2Mbps.

BTW- That will be the day when BSNL provides the guaranteed minimum speed of 256 kpbs . Most of the time my d/l speeds are around 100 kbps only and maxes out at 1000+ kbps !!!. May be my low SNRs (6 / 9 db upstream/downstream) has to do with this?

(PS I'm not talking of kBps but kbps !!)

the utorrent 300kbps normally is 300KBps . .which is pretty cool.. 300*8=2.4mbps..nice..

@whitestar_999 : Yes I am aware that uTorrent shows d/l u/l speeds in its status bar in kBps and not kbps. In addition to monitoring the speed there, I use BitMeter to monitor my broadband speed and usage. I've set the readout to give speed in kbps rather than kBps in bitmeter so I am quoting in kbps only.

so @superprash3000:it not so cool for me really :

have you done port forwarding in your modem?
From what I could gather from this forum - I don't think I need to do port forwarding since I am on bridge mode.
On my machine the Windows XP firewall is being used for blocking non-required ports. (I tried removing access to this port/uTorrent and the uTorrent status button turned yellow with ! mark - so firewall works)

do you see a green tick mark in utorrent?
Yes -I do see the green check mark in the uTorrent status bar (always).

try downloading some popular torrent to find out actual speeds
Yes - I have tried ubuntu torrents and also slackware.com/torrents and also direct download from oracle.com / microsoft.com using download managers.

SNR values must be above 10 & also Line Attn values must not be higher than 30-32.i think you should get your line checked.also make sure that telephone line coming into house goes directly into splitter with no phone connected before splitter.in your modem settings make sure operational mode is G.dmt & not ADSL2.

Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

The incoming phoneline does go directly to the splitter with no phone before it. Phone(s) are connected after the splitter only.

You'd suggested this in another post - my modem is HuaWei MT800 and I have settings G.dmt and Multimode - no ADSL2 . I set it to G.dmt but did not see any significant difference tho SNR did go up by 25%.

my Low speed issue started around 3 months back. There is massive road construction activity (sub-ways) going on around where I live, so I guess the line quality is deteriorated. Does BSNL have any tool/instrument /method to check the SNR/Atten numbers?

usually BSNL too relies on modem details of SNR & Attn values.in your modem note down the values & then contact your local exchange telling them about your low speed problem & also mention the road construction activity.also tell them that you suspect something is wrong with line & tell them to check your line.

The JTO of my exch not aware of SNR and Attn values. He is about to retire and not at all conversant with current technology.

I did lodge a complaint with BSNL call centre 1500 - they sent linemen to check the telephone line and said (hoo boy) your phone instrument is not OK. Pls change the same. When I told them that I had no issues with phone line but with broadband speed and line SNR - they said the exchange would take care of that and vanished.....Probably they will just close the call saying- user phone instrument defective - adviced user to change instrument !!

most of the places the quality of BSNL cable is very poor and old. Hence SNR improvement practically may not be feasible
