I am pretty sure that I am the best person to advise you on this The reason being I have spent lacks and lacks or rupees on latest computers and desktops over the last 10 years or so and I always used to make it a point to get the best possible config with latest processors and some systems even 8gb of ram...

Its only been about two years since I came to my senses and have stopped spending money on computers like an idiot... The computer I bought for Rs1.5 lakhs about 5 years back is now available at a price tag of about 30 thousand.. and to be honest I have never ever used any of my systems to its fullest potential.. not even once.

So I suggest yo get a computer which is just good enough for what you need it for. If you are a regular gamer then it does make sense to get some top notch config otherwise if you are like me who just uses a comp for basic stuff then I guess your laptop is serving the purpose.

Backups: I have never used cd or dvd burners on my computers or laptops. I use external hard drives for that purpose. I am sure you can get a 120 gig external hard drive to use with your usp port on laptop for no more then Rs2000

The best thing about using a hard drive for storage is that its less effort every time you want to save or retrive something... You can delete files if you dont want them anymore but with a cd you will have to throw it away unless of course its a re writable one.

Burning a cd takes a lot of time as compared to saving data on an external hard drive.

So my advise is that dont buy a new comp untill your laptop dies no point wasting your hard earned money.

as admin said don't unnecessarily spend money for tasks you will never or rarely do.here is a quick tip----always get a graphics card.it's the most important thing after CPU/RAM combo to increase speed of your computer especially while watching videos/doing some visual editing stuff.it is also must if you are planning on watching HD videos.if you are not a serious gamer/rarely play games even the least powerful of nvidia 8xxx series is more than enough for you.i.e.8400GS.if you plan on playing some games but not at high resolutions with all options turned on get 8600GT.if you consider yourself some sort of serious gamer then go for 8800GT.
any dual core processor 2GHz or above will get you through almost all tasks you intend to do.these processors are dirt cheap now.

for rs.18000 i think you can easily get a fast dual core processor, decent budget motherboard,8400/8600 graphics card,DVD writer,250/320GB hard disc & RAM.only thing you have to really spend money on is a good LCD monitor.go for 22" monitor from either DELL or SAMSUNG.both will cost around Rs.16000-17000.

Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

well both of you have offered me ur wonderful views about what i should do with my comp and i must say i like games but ones which catch my eyes like GRID, need for speed, halo, bioshock, and afew heavy weight games plus i like watching movies in a good 22 inch monitor like the viewsonic monitor i use at work. but u know what i would stick admins advice and not spend hard earned money on something which i know will fall in terms of price. but why i spoke about backing up on dvds is bcos my first time my compaq lappy hitachi drive inside got busted and then i gave it back to showroom to exchange the drive and they did and then six months later the new hitachi one they put in again got busted so i decided to replace it with a WD drive which i trust in.

which is why for lack of trust and all those movies i have i decided to think about backing up on dvds... this im speaking interms of movies and music and afew personal docs only.
after all these will be stored away in data format on my dvd for me to copy if ever my drive gets busted again.

so tell me now... is what im saying worth it with respect to my data???

lemme know... and when i visit then i will ask u further stuff!! but thanks for the advice. im looking forward to more on the same topic.

I suppose getting a new pc would be great for gaming but if its just about the data then just get an external cd/dvd drive to burn your dvd's and cd's.

DVD's are a good idea for backing up your data just make sure that you keep your DVD's in a CD/DVD poutch & always burn DVD's at 1 step lower than max possible speed.e.g.burn 12x DVD at 8x,16x DVD at 12x etc.always select verify disc after burning option in NERO.i currently have around 400DVD's with me on which most of my data is backed up & even though it takes time to burn DVD's are very reliable if you keep them with care.

I also agree with Admin.. Back up on external hard drive is a better option rather than on DVD. Whitestar how u are storing and managing uour DVD collection?? In normal pouches fungus can damage the DVDs on humid ambient conditions.

i have around 10-12 CD/DVD pouches packed inside a bag.all the pouches are from writex & each cost me around Rs.60.i opened them only once in a while & till now no problems.some of the DVD's are 2 years old & they too work fine.

2 Yrs is a very limited duratio. U have to put some Silica Gel crystals along with each CD pouch to control humidity and related Fungus infection
