Default Change of modem reduces speed?

    Hi guys,

This is the first time i'm postin in this forum. I'll try to explain as clearly as i can.

    I am in Coimbatore, Tamilnadu.

I got my bsnl broadband on 16th june. Before that i was using reliance broadband with the adsl modem ut-300r2 model. When i asked bsnl, they said i can use the same one for bsnl also, so i got the connection with the same modem. As soon as i got the connection, i started downloading using bitlord. At first, the speed was like 30 kBps and then it started increasing to 36 kBps the next time i started bitlord. Then it went to the 40 range and it was superb. Then it kept on increasing until it reached even a rate in the range of 70 kBps. The average was always between 60 and 70 kBps. The upload speed also was maintained at an average of 65 and 75 kBps (slightly higher than download speed).

In my area, the powercut is daily from 10 am to 12 noon and from 6 to 6.30 pm daily. During these times, i will hibernate my system. But sometimes during unexpected powercut, the ups will fail and i will switch off my system by pressing and holding the power button. And each time, after the power comes, when i switch on my pc, the modem's pppoe light and lan light would take nearly 10 mins to come on. Then after each powercut daily, the lights began to come on only after 30 mins, then 60 mins, then 2 hours, then 3 hours, then 5 hours. Finally on june 30th, when there was a powercut and after the power came back, the pppoe light never came on...for 2 full days. But i thought it was a problem with bsnl and i called them, bcos i got error 678. The web management page (192.168.1.1) also didnt open. It always showed "Network cable unplugged" in the taskbar in XP. Only after 2 days i realized it was the modem which got damaged. I called bsnl people and they told me to get another modem and they will configure it.

So i decided to use my tata indicom modem which i already had. It is also an adsl one. But the bsnl people couldnt tel me the configuration on the phone, since they didnt have this model in their list and they can configure it only if they see it. So i took it to them yesterday and they configured it. But now in the same bitlord, i am getting only 24 kBps download speed and my upload speed is only 18 - 20 kBps. This modem is manufactured by Xavi Technologies Corporation, China. The model no is X7721r+.

In both the modems, only bridge mode. No pppoe mode.

    So, my questions are

    1) Will the change in modem have anything to do with the decrease in speed?
    2) If I somehow get my ut-300r2 modem repaired or get a new one, will i get my speed back?
    3) Or was I just lucky to get such speeds? (I think not, bcos I got that speed for exactly 2 weeks, before modem got damaged)

As i already said, this is my first time posting here. So i will be thankful if u could help me out here.

Modem must support ADSL2+ or G.Dmt. I think the above modem qualifies on that. Check the MTU setting - it should be 1492 or 1500. Try 1492 first (don't ask me where and how because I do not have the manual).

Also internet speed depends upon the plan. For example using the UL750/UL750+ plans you get max speed of 256 kbps or 32 KB/s.

basic settings will be same for all modems like VPI/VCI values, encapsulation type etc.as for low speeds in torrents you have to configure port forwarding if you are using pppoe mode(in which you get connected by just turning on the modem) & again basic settings are same.take a look here----

You are getting 24KB/s on 750 UL connection. that quite good speed. I think there is no problem with your modem. The problem is with your Plan. I was in 750 UL plan. and due to this speed problem I change my plan to 1350/-.

it happened sometimes that users get 512kbps speeds in 256kbps plans.in fact many users in bangalore especially get 512kbps on 256kbps plans.speed in an ADSL connection mainly depends on line condition & speed cap set at DSLAM connected to your telephone line at local exchange.changing modem settings won't double your speeds.

No need. Your speed is perfactly ok. If you want to increase the speed. then go for 1350or better go for any limited plan. like 500c. You were getting 60 - 70 kbps in an 750 Ul plan. that was an accident.

I am in 1350UL plan and I am getting 60KB/s at an avarage.
