    Smile Introduction

I joined the forum in the last hour.

I am a retired person, enjoying the last phase of my life. After leading a full life in Mumbai for over six decades, I have moved into the sleepy town called Kakinada ,pop <5Lakhs.

Naturally,to keep oneself active mentally,I chose amongst others, the route of internet.I do not have a passion for surfing,so I spend few hrs in the morning and night, visiting various sites of interest. I am a member oy Yahoo groups and Msn etc.mostly astrology, health etc

Surfing is generally a frustrating experience, because nothing moves , just like in the country.

There are therefore two issues which need to be addressed.

    1. Speeding up the net.

    2. Hiding the IP address, for various reasons, including hacking.

I have a BSNL broadband modem Data One /purchased/supplied by BSNL. The speed is 54Mbps as shown, but surfing speed is on its own speed.
Add a dose of Virus ,you have real problems.

I guess this is good for an intro.

    Regards,

    Ralla

    Welcome to IBF.

A few simple precautions can help you feel safe. Internet is the greatest treasure available to common man. Only thing is you should know where to look. Where else we get free music, games, cinema and software.

PS: We have an introduction section.

    Welcome, Mr. ralla, to IBF.

    1. Your net speed is not 54 MBps. That is the speed of your wi-fi modem/router. The internet speed is determined by the BSNL plan you have. Please let us know your plan name.

Plan speeds are described in kilobits per second or kbps. The computer shows the speed in kilobytes per socond of kBps. 1 kBps = 8 kbps. So if you plan speed is 256 kbps, then your computer will show a speed as 32 kBps.

However, if you conduct a speedtest on Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test, you will get the near accurate speed and it will be shown in kbps or mbps.

    2. There are many articles here in the Broadband How to section. There are guides on how to make your connection secure, free from possible hack attacks, etc.

If you have specific questions, do give a shout and the whole community will be eager to help you.
