Default part 2 - admin:increase broadband speed with dns

This is a sequel like thing of admin’s thread “increase bb speed by changing DNS”
As I have read, our friends have mistaken the concept of DNS. By thinking it can increase speed (DoWnload spd).

Well even though being a network eng I very well know, where does DNS stand in ths, but still I cant help posting these pics which will defiantly confuse you.. at least some of u.

Now about increasing speed by changing to a 3rd party DNS is a good way, but if u have a way of storing history of Host(a) records then it will be better, b cause then you don’t need a DNS to resolve the names (ones u already visited), so anymore info about this is welcome here

    Hi,
    thanx for the info...
actually i am sharing BSNL dataone connection on LAN....
Do i need to configure my router for better speed.... it works fine and fast when configured over a single machine... but if i hook my router with switch and share it, the speed falls very low ( even only 1 machine is used).... earlier i had similar setup at other place where it worked perfectly fine..... do i need to make any changes.... or do i need to keep my router away from switch, it might be causing any signal / noise intereference... or is it due to trojan or something on other machine that might be causing problem....
    Pls help....

are you using switch or a hub
hub would be slow as they do not have any intelligence in them, they just broadcast every thing to every body and this may case frames to collide or have losses and decrease the speed

switches are intelligent and forward the packets only to the required ports

possibility of a trojan.. cause adding a switch should not decrease speed

well firstly i feel checking your speed from the bsnl site isnt a good idea!!secondly i dont think it has anything to do with the DNS servers.. to get actual proof, you could download a file with different DNS servers rather than doing a speed test

yup dns servers dont produce such high speed for downloading and the BSNL speed check facility just does what it is designed to do and that is to calculate what input it gets so yup it may increase broadband surfing speed but it doesnt really check ur download speed... it just does some arithmetic and thats about it!!

if you download files using different DNS it is not going to help, nor speed up

DNS are used to resolve the name to ip and ip to names
this is usefull when you are browsing websites.
So if you are on a faster DNS then the websites will open faster because the name resolution will happen faster, but one the name is resolved it does not matter how fast the dns server is the speed will be the same like for downloading files etc

so DNS will be use full when you are opening different webpages which load faster that it

I agree with garden city boy because DNS are used to resolve the IP and not to increase the download speed. Using open DNS one can serf faster but download will be same
