    Default Strange Problem-Help Needed

    Connection: HOME 500C+
Problem: Direct download speed too low.

    Symptoms:
1)direct download(from a non-indian server) via firefox is in the range of 5KB/s to 30KB/s

2)Using flash-get for downloading from the same server(since it makes many connections to the same server for downloading a single file) the speed multiplies and i get around 170-190 KB/s and sometimes even 200+
*This rules out the problem of line being faulty*

3)i tested my speed using speedtest.net and i did the test for two servers one the indian server(Mumbai) and the other Maldives server, not surprisingly the results were:
    Mumbai server:1623Kb/s
    insert"http"here://insert"www"here.speedtest.net/result/303119889.png

    Mladives server:139Kb/s
    insert"http"here://insert"www"here.speedtest.net/result/303120884.png

*sorry coudn't post urls since it's my first post

4)Next i logged on to linux and started a download from the repository... unfortunately

    speed is a max 20KB/s

5)to make things worse during night happy hours direct download using firefox is below

    10KB/s consistently.

*Fortunately it hasn't affected my torrent download but unfortunately i can't stream

videos from youtube or for that matter from no other foreign servers

    i've tried:

1)both ethernet mode and pppoe mode.
    2)re-installed windows.
    3)re-installed firefox.
4)all kinds of speed optimization technique awailable on the net.
    5)no viruses,malwares,rootkits etc.

1st of all don't rely on those speed test results, they are never any where close to actually what u are supposed to get.so rule out that.

coming to direct download without any download manager or optimizer, windows does not have any way of optimizing the whole available 256 kbps(2 Mbps) bandwidth so multiple connection to a server is not possible nor does it wholly utilizes the whole of the available bandwidth thus the low speed.even my speed varies from 0-47 kbps on a normal day.

there is nothing to worry about and am sure there will be lots of others who will be having the same verdict.

the same file the same server gets a peed difference from 20KB/s via direct download to 170KB/s via Flash-get is because there is some problem....
Download managers split the file and requests parts of the file to be downloaded at the same time hence the effective speed is increased... but via direct download the file is downloaded sequentially... hence only one connection.

In my experience this is pretty normal. I cant do much with my connection here at Delhi as its just a 256kbps connection and 512 at night but in UK I have a 24Mbps connection and the same issue as yours... a direct download would never give me a speed more then say 3-4Mbps and the rest of the bandwidth remains unutilised and with a download manager by creating 10-15 connections at a time I get speeds in excess of 20Mbps from some servers and while downloading using torrents (utorrent) I some times touch 23Mbps.

This only becomes a problem when the server you want to download from doesnt let you create multiple connections and in that case I normally leave stuff to download over night.

the thing is... BSNL guys promises a minimum speed of 256kbps and a maximum of 2mbps... so that means i should at least get 30kBps d/l speed min.... the speed im getting is below 20 KBps, which is pathetic comparing to my friends who are getting speeds of 100+KBps for direct download from ubuntu repos and all keeping in mind the fact that they are having my same connection except that they are in different phone exchanges...comparing to other BSNL HOME500 plan users i.e. 2Mbps users, i am having way slow direct download speeds

Have you tried downloading 5-10mb files at different times of the day to see if that makes any difference?

And How far are you from the telephone exchange?

yeah i have i know the speed will only increase gradually..... i tried downloading large files... but no use... if its a non-indian server then the direct download speed is below 30Kbps... but if its an indian server speeds soar up to about 150kBps+(like i mentioned in the speed test!)... if it was under utilization of the bandwidth then this wouldnt be the case na!!

distamce from the Exchange would be about 1500m to 2000m

    Mode: ADSL2+
change it to G.dmt.if you see various options like ADSL2+,G.dmt etc all checked/enabled keep only G.dmt enabled with all others unchecked/disabled.
