Default Going for BSNL UL 750 starting from my first month!!

    Hello!

Well, after a long time, I see BSNL in my sight. I am totally bugged up of Reliance NC. I get just around 16 KBps. It's what I should get but pretty low for downloading junkie! Even a beginner..

    Reliance Speed Test:
    http://www.speedtest.net/result/309769195.png

Last time when I was with BSNL. They gave me Home 250 plan instead of UL900 (2 mbps wasn't introduced that time). And that too without any notice!! I ended up downloading about 50 GB and we got a bill charging me about 50k

Well, they agreed for a deal. My dad would pay 40k instead of 50k. (I'm 14 at the moment, age doesn't matter so much anyway). So, now we're going for UL750 plan starting right from the first month.

Has there been improvement in thier services ??
And any upgrade news for the unlimited plans ??

Also, I have a PC and a laptop.
So, I have thought of purchasing a second LAN Card for the PC.
One will be for the modem, the other to connect the laptop to.

But how will they work ?

What time will they take to get me a phone, then the BB connection ?
    And any activation stuff??

Dude, i myself was somewhat in ur situation 5 months ago, i got a wrong bill of 10k on 250 plan, then i switched to UL900( now its UL750), speed is 30 kilobytes/sec to be specific, i.e. 256Kbps, if ur ok with that, then take it, else i think that home 500 are also good, except that u dont cross limits during day hours, but u have to be a nightwing to download at night, my plan suits me well, i download almost 12 hrs a day, even at night, so i dont have to worry about any limits, choose your options carefully, there's no improvement in their plans or speed.

Ah, for ur pc and laptop connection, u can try getting a wifi modem, bsnl says then to be type 2 model, type 1 is the normal one, type 2 costs 1800, i have the same one, its siemens, and secondly, u can connect that modem to ur pc and then make a home wifi network so that u can connect your laptop to the internet via ur modem, i tried the same, speed on the laptop is also ok ( if the system is not using the internet at the same time). and thirdy, dude, as u know, bsnl is govermental, so those folks take a lot of time in getting u connected, so u'll have to wait, or if u want it to be early, then stick to them and ask someone to go to their office and get ur work done fast. thats it.

It is better to start with UL 750 plan so that you can protect yourself from "unnecessary surprises" when the bill drops in into the post box.

The average speed is 20~28 KB/s.

However, the best plan would be 500C+

Agreed. But it is better to start with UL 750 first, generally feel the atmosphere, analyze your needs, download necessary downloads like AV updates, Windows Updates, get familarized with the automated reboot scripts, etc.

Also portal id is not always available right at the start. Sometimes one has to wait for months. I could not get my portal id for 4 months and I actually called the Bangalore NOC for the same - that is when I got it. Without portal id and usage details you are basically fishing in dark.

Once you have settled down and analysed the BB needs, you can change the plan. It is important to ensure safety before speed.

At 256 kbps, the page loads will not be electrifying fast but they will be OK. By switching to Open DNS servers, you can cut down on the domain resolution time and thus get better page loading.

What I will suggest that try the UL 750+ plan for a few days. If the speeds appear OK then stick to it; else switch to Home Combo plans. But note that there is a usage limit on Home Combo plans. Home Combo plans are better suited for heavy downloading during the free usage time (2 AM to 8 AM).

You will have to make a rough estimate of your usage. Since you may not be accurate with this start with UL plan first.

There is also the UL 1350+ plan that gives 512 kbps speed at Rs. 1350 (Plus tax) per month.

Is it better than Airtel's package?

This is a question not easily answered - so best left unanswered.

If you have Airtel in you area, they give a reasonable service. They have the following unlimited plans that match the above BSNL plan:

    a) Home 888 Plus: 256 kbps-(6.30am-10:30pm), 512 kbps-(10:30pm-6:30am) @ Rs. 888 (plus tax) pm
    b) Home 1499: 512 kbps @ Rs. 1499 (plus tax) pm

So in effect, Airtel's plans are costlier. That is all that can be said.

    Thanks just4kix,

    "a) Home 888 Plus: 256 kbps-(6.30am-10:30pm), 512 kbps-(10:30pm-6:30am) @ Rs. 888 (plus tax) pm"

This is what I currently have. Basically I burnt my hands with a limited package, so I wanted a good UL package. I took this.

Don't go for UL750 plan. The speed will drive you mad.

So, Home 888 Plus is better than the previous BSNL Home 900UL plan? What is the average speed for this plan, at the two time spaces?

Airtel's Home 888 plan is a recent addition. It did not exist when BSNL's UL900 plan existed. No ISP has been able to beat BSNL on prices as yet.

You mean you get that speed in torrents or otherwise also?

If just torrents, check whether port is forwarded. Also check SNR and line attenuation values from modem's status page. Post the same here.

Hi, Perhaps you have not read this thread carefully and looked at the poll results. You will observe that you will get 256 kbps or 32 KB/s (max) from UL750 plan.

UL750 plan is not good for downloading tons of data (in GB). It is meant for low to medium downloading, all day long, without worrying about bills.

Whatever modem you use... U won't get speed greater than what u were getting... i.e., 250 KBps if u choose 2MBps plan... A good modem can help u in good signal over larger area if u use wi-fi... A good modem can help u in stable connection... But maximum speed depends upon the plan of your ISP u've chosen...

U won't get more than 32 KBps in 750UL plan... As Just4Kix suggested, its good for light n medium downlaoding only... Its good if u do voice & video chats all time... Its good to watch videos from Youtube anytime.... Plus if u want to download more.. U'll have to put ur PC on 24*7....

But if u are a download junkie, then opt for 500 night UL plan.... and avoid using bandwidth in day-time...

    @frens4ravi,

A lot of questions. First a clarification. Do you mean LINKSYS modem? Because I have never heard of linsky.

Be it as it may, your new modem is not going to help you speed up your downloads. It is just a device to connect to the ISP. Speed depends upon the plan and the plan only.

You are mentioning kbps. Note that kbps denotes kilo bits per second whereas kBps denotes kilo bytes per second.

    - with a UL750 plan, you get 256 kbps or 32 kBps max.
    - with the Home 500 plan, you get a speed from 256 kbps (32 kBps) and anthing up to 2048 kbps (256 kBps).

Finally, whether you need a phone or not, whether you need free calls or not, that is irrelevant. BSNL provides BB via telephone cables. A fixed line with telephone is given to you. You cannot return it and say "transfer voice credit to my BB credit" or something like that. Whether you use the telephone or not, is your choice.

Also please confirm whether your new modem is an ADSL2+ modem/router or just a plain router. Mention its model number. In all probability it is just a router. In that case you will still require the BSNL modem.

Refer to the various guides in Broadband How to section.
