The following things may help (do it in this order):

a) Download the TCPIP.SYS patcher. I do not have the link handy but just google it and you will get it. The patched TCPIP.SYS allows more than 8 half open connections.
b) Upgrade to uTorrent 1.8.
c) In uTorrent advanced setting, change max half_open_connections from 8 to 50.
d) Ensure that your port is forwarded properly
e) If you are using any Firewall (including Windows Firewall) make sure that uTorrent is part of the exceptions.
f) Finally, always hunt for a torrent that has good number of seeds.

Ya all these i have done but i want to know what settings to keep in the connection type? 256k or 2mbps? since my connection varies in between the two. and what about other settings like max upload rate, global max no. of connections, max no. of connected peers per torrent, no. of upload slots per torrent?

Torrents work on the principle of file sharing from various people over the internet.

Please read this: Torrents and Port Fowarding Guide

This may answer most of your questions.

Mine is also Home 500 C connection (256 kbps ~ 2 mbps). I found the best results with:

Connection
Randomize port at each start = Unchecked
Enable UPnP port mappings = Checked
Enable NAT-PMP port mappings = Checked
Add uTorrent to Windows Firewall = Checked

Bandwidth
Maximum Upload Rate = 22
Global Maximum Connections = 600
Max number of Peers per torrent = 100
Number of upload slots per torrent = 6
Max number of active torrents (upload or download) = 6
Max number of active downloads = 5

OK. Just note that the tips/settings go hand in hand with the TCPIP.SYS patcher, uTorrent 1.8 and setting max half open connections to 50.

Yesterday while downloading "Metallica" - Metallica - 12 Albums.torrent (2.17 GB) & Metallica - Best of the Best.torrent (471 MB), I got phenomenal speeds. I don't have the screen shots but the results were as under:

- over 100 active seeds. The seeds showed 108/(608)
- speed was on an average 200 KB/s. It topped at 212 KB/s but that is just abnormality.
- Both torrents completed in about 3 hours

But note that unless there is high number of seeds who are in turn seeding at high speeds (over 20 KB/s each), it is not possible to achieve such phenomenal results.
