Shebin222,

Before you go to the consumer court, Let me clarify you a technical fact about ADSL.

BSNL broadband and several broadband providers have a contention ratio. Its nothing but, in simple words, u share a bandwidht pipe with n number of users. Further, drilling down, For example, an ISP says that his contetnion ratio is 1:4 means that for any 256 or 512 or 1Mbps line, the bandwith is shared between 4 users at a connected time. It means that, IF a single user is logged in to the network in an exchange, and all the other users are not logged in, the 1st user enjoys the whole 256 or 512 Kbps bandwith alloted to him as per his plan. But if the other 2 or 3 users are connected to the network, the speed drastically comes down to the quarter of the total bandwith.

So, quarter of 256 Kbps is 64 Kbps. If it dreally goes down this speed limit, you are really in trouble..

To provide a cost effective service - all ADSL services world-wide are ‘contended’ (shared). These contention ratios are applied in the backbone and international part of the network. In lay man's language it just means "How many people are fighting for the same internet connection line as you?". All customers are guaranteed the “Plan” rate up to the local exchange or the ADSL equipment to which they are connected. Contention begins at the connection from your local exchange to the ISP which is shared by other users. On the shared part of the network a 20:1 contention ratio would mean that a 256 kbps connection would be shared by you and a maximum of 19 others. In reality this is very unlikely to happen and the customer would find the connection much faster than dial-up modems. In actuallity the number of people sharing bandwidth is much more complex and it tends to be like say 3400 users with 512kbps ADSL connection sharing a 34Mbps connection, which means that a few users running at full speed have less of an effect on other users. ADSL relies on individual users not making unreasonable traffic demands on the network to provide fast access speeds for all. If you are not getting the speed you expect, it can be not only due to the contention ratio but also due to many other factors including the congestion at the remote site you are accessing.

Taken from BSNL Chennai Website

Maybe thats the reason u are experiencing slower speeds

I dont think you can do anything about it..

Try using TATA Indicom Broadband till your local exchange upgrades to higher port quantity.

Default Speed Problem with BSNL Broadband

I am having BSNL Broadband 256kbps Home connection.

Today, I tested the speed with McAfee speedometer and found the speed as 40 & 60 kbps at one time and 100 kbps some time later. The speed checked by Calcutta Telephones Broadband meter was around 313.6 kbps in the first two occasions and 1814.1 kbps(with XP OS) and 599 kbps(with 98 SE) in the last occasion.

My experience with internet surfing and downloading tallies with the speed given by McAfee. I got download speed of 3 kbps, 9-12 kbps and 15-16 kbps at different times.

BSNL promises speed upto 2 Mbps which translates to around 200 kbps download speed.

I am having dual booting with 98SE and XP.

Kindly help

which plan you have?if you have unlimited plan then its speed is max 256kbps but for limited 2mbps plans its max speed is around 256KBps but you will usually get around 220KBps on an average.confirm your plan & also did you get your line checked by bsnl before taking broadband because if line is not in good condition you won't get speeds.

in your modem settings look for values SNR & Line Attn in overview/status tab.SNR values must be greater than 10 & Line Attn values must be less than 32-33.

hi i am from alipore area of kolkata n i am facing the same problem with very slow browsing speed but good download speed. i have tried different browsers IE, opera, firefox but speed still sucks. i hv formatted the hard drive but there is no respite. after i format it is lightning fast for a day and becomes slow. i use nod32 i have runned several online scans. so there is no possibility of virus, trojan, adware and spyware. i hv also checked the process running in task manager but there is nothing to suspect.

is anyone else in kolkata facing the same problem. also to let u know this problem is intermittent n with different websites at different times. so is it a problem from bsnl end. something is wrong somewhere as i know lot of people using bsnl complaing of trojans in last few days also intermittent very slow browsing speed.

Default never ending torrent problem

i'm actually fed up of persistent torrent problem!:cursing:

i use bsnl 500c plan(night 2-8 unlimited) utr300r2u modem

the problem
the router freezes midway during the night usually within 1 hr (2-3am).usually it happens twice a week. but for the past 2 weeks it happens everyday. so it really affects my downloads. i am fed up. before freezing the torrent speed is normal 150-200 KB/S(port forwarding enabled).

things i tried
1. i changed from utorrent to bittorrent to azureus same problem.
2. i changed from bridge to pppoe same problem.
3. i reduced global max connections from 500 to 300 to 200 to 135 same problem
4. i disabled dth service, undp port mapping and nat/pmt port mapping same problem

i have to thank this forum members for enlightening me about the knowledge of internet and auto scheduling from 2-8am.
hope u could suggest some other methods to solve my problem.

thanks for reading through my sufferings and sorrow now u can carry on with ur work!
sorry for disturbing ur mood today!
