Sorry for the delayed reply. The post got lost in the tons of other unread.

(p/s. That is why I get mad when people bump up old threads for no reason).

    So coming back to topic.

Partially downloaded torrents don't get lost in either of the following conditions:

    a) You delete the torrent tracker from the client bit leave the downloaded stuff intact.
    b) You reinstall the torrent client
    c) You copy the (partially) downloaded torrent file on another computer and start the torrent on that computer.
    d) You copy the (partially) downloaded torrent file on another disk/USB, reformat the PC disk, resinstall the OS, utils, torrent client and restart the torrent on the same computer.

In all the cases above, the torrent client will restart from the point it left off.

    a) It will start checking the files again.
    b) After the files are checked, the downloads will start.
    c) Important: When you reload the torrent file (.torrent) in the client, make sure you point to the correct folder where the partially downloaded files are located.
    d) Loss: There is some loss. A torrent file is downloaded in pieces. For example, a 700 MB file may be made up of 2800 pieces of 256 KB each. Incompletely downloaded pieces are lost if you do any of the above. If the previous downloaded session had 6 pieces not completely downloaded, then these will be lost and downloaded again.

Unhappy Connection Fails While Using utorrent

I have this problem for like 2 months

When i try downloading something with utorrent [i use mininova torrents] the connection fails after abt 10 mins. All the four LEDs of modems remains still on. But Internet Connection is lost. I'm 100% sure this happens only when i download using torrents. Bcoz when i don't download anything from torrent i get a long sustained net connection. All this happens when i try to download at night. Then I switch the modem off and on then again i get 10min before the connection gets lost. This is too anonying.

I think there can be two reasons

    i) Either BSNL has put some resistrictions on trackers
ii) or I have some problem within my computer

(ii) option will be true only if none of you is getting this problem

Overall BSNL is best if you don't use it at night. Great Download speed at reasonable cost.

    My Details Are
    Broadband Plan: 500/- [Night Unlimited]
    State: Gujarat
    City: Surat

Try reinstalling utorrent. You will not loose uncompleted downloads. Try to keep not more than one active download at a time.

I do not think that BSNL has put any restriction on torrents else we would have seen hundreds of such posts. However, if you have another friend in your city having BSNL connection, you could request him to download the same torrent and verify.

Note that there is a tiny possibility that BSNL has put restrictions on some objectionable material. Don't ask me what. I am merely speculating.

    Wink Cheap Routers

This Problem mainly happens due to "NAT Table Overload" problem. Cheap routers (SOHO) have only few MB's of Memory which quickly gets filled when too many connections are open simultaneously.

Two Solutions to solve this problem
    1) Change your Router from PPPoE to Bridge mode if you intend to use internet only on Single PC.

    2) Else

    a)Disable DHT in uTorrent.
b)in Peers tab Disable "Resolve IP's"
c)Reduce your Global Connections to 70 and Connections per torrent to 35.

    Smile Torrenting

Hey thats absolutely correct... Mostly depends on Seeds & Leechers... Use random ports if necessary... There's no need to stop the firewall at all... Thats even risky... Turn on the firewall but include the torrent software in its accepted list thats all... You can even try out with a different software as well... Like BiTtorrent or BiTcommet... These are competitve enough... Sometimes even the corruption in OS can give low speeds & connection errors aswell... Use of a Internet Security Suit might also cause problems coz they have their firewall aswell... No patches required or configuration really needed belive me... While downloading a torrent always see its present health i.e.,seeds & Leeches... the more the better... & always read all the comments specially when downloading a software otherwise GOD save your pc... Hope this helps...

I am having the same problem. The speed fluctuates between 100kbps and 2kbps.

    Something fishy from BSNL side

Interesting suggestions. I would like to understand more.

    a) What does DHT do and what advantages do you get with DHT ON or OFF?
    b) Ditto for "resolve IPs"

    Cool Explanations

DHT is used for trackerless torrents means you can find other peers even when main tracker is down. it uses UDP to connect but tries to connect to too many nodes as you can see in the status bar of uTorrent (XXX Nodes). disabling DHT will surely help in this Situation.

in Peers tab "Resolve IP" is used to show country flag of connected peer so it's useless for most users so disabling it lowers the connection attempts.

Also in many routers you can fine tune Default NAT timeout values to improve the performance.

Resolve IP is used for address translation...... from IP address (numerical identifier) to DNS name(Human friendly identifier) in this case by retrieving them from the name servers..... here when u point your arrow at the ip address it ll show you the DNS in UTorrent and the flag.....

    Cool Reverse DNS

Yeah, uTorrent uses Reverse DNS to map a peer IP to DNS name. it also uses the internet database of allocated IP ranges to different countries to show the country flag accordingly and to do this uTorrent makes extra connections for each connected peer for this almost useless information. So my point was to disable this feature to reduce connection attempts.

    Angry

I think heavy bandwidth usage and choked BSNL servers are the main issue causing this problem. Many users all over India are reporting similar problem.

Downloaded Windows 7 RC today without issues. The DAP speed was 180+ kB/s on an average.

    Default Try Webmin

Install webmin by a 'sudo apt-get install webmin' or download the .deb file from webmin site.
    Setup a cron job.

And as far as the shutdown/stand-by is concerned use
sudo shutdown -P 07:55 "Torrent download complete" ,
this will shutdown your computer at 7.55 am
