    Default What if I'll start my modem @ 07.55 AM...

    Hi All,
    While surfing through 'India Broadband' I came to know that I have to switch off/on the modem at 02.05 AM and 07.55 AM, otherwise the download will be chargeable.

    Reason given is BSNL is not having any means in place to check that when 'unlimited slot' get started or ended. The only way for them to check it out is the time when IP is assigned to peer.

    Correct me if I am wrong. Anyway, I am doing this because I don't want to take any chance.

    if (I am correct) {
    What if I start my modem at 07.50 AM and keep downloading? Is it free, because time when IP was assigned falls in unlimited slot?
    } else {
    kindly enlighten me
    }

    Regards

    Its a very grey area... if I was you I wouldnt take any chances.. although in theory your point is valid but what if you download a few hundred gb's and it turns out that it doesnt work the way we thought it does?

    As everyone said above, do not take a chance before 2 AM and after 8 AM.

    Agreed. Even I don't want to take chance.

    I was thinking that BSNL is taking care of it, but because of this forum, I know that we have to take care.
    Thanks guys. Keep posting such information.

    This info is not posted on BSNL site but the same is clearly stated on MTNL site.

    Now why would you do such a Dumb thing like that???!!!

    Anyways, guys, I would like to tell you that BSNL does use a Timer, Which is not synchronized, which means that it doesn't automatically cut off our usage (charged) between 2-8am. Sad

    Imagine you start your internet connection at 1.45am to 3.45am, So at 2 am, your free downloading starts right. BSNL does not have the software to cut-off your usage at 2am itself, It means that you will be charged continously if you dont restart the modem before and after 2 and 8 am respectively.

    in simple terms relton wants to say that
    any connection which starts before 2am stays on till whatever time is chargable and any session which starts at any time and stays on after 8am is chargable.

    session which you make after 2am and disconnect before 8 am is free.

    i hope you got a clear picture now.

    Hey Guys,

    Im not sure why there is so much fuss about this issue. I really think the BSNL folks have better tracking mechanisms than we give them credit for.

    For my case, i almost never turn off my modem.. Ever (Im afraid to lose the stable connection.. hehe!!..

    When i check it out.. the time tracker is like.. For Eg: 19.45 Tuesday to 19:45 Wednesday.

    But whatever i download from 2-8 is still free.
    Ive been using this for like a year.. and ive never had any problems of BSNL overchargin me.

    What yo download from 2-8 is free.. doesn matter when the modem resets or is turned on.

    Well.. tats what i feel..

    Default Starting modem at 07.55 A.M.

    All it would happen that you will get another half an hour free.That is all.Till BSNL chaps change the software to measure usage in perfect synchrony with time.Got it.I have done it fairly frequently and it works and I got the tip from here.

    it is very confusing discussion.. as i know from all the posts and threads any session which stays online after 8am is a chargeable from from starting of session till the end of session that's why most of the people here were worried about restarting router or modem at 2am and 8am... they were looking for some software which can reset connection automatically...

    why don't you people call BSNL or visit any cust. care center once to get a clear picture of same... which can help everyone out here...

    As per my knowledge, there is no information in BSNL site regarding this.
    I will call the Customer Care and will update the forum. Talking to CC guys is itself a big job...

    this is what actually happens.. Bsnl will allow a grace period of half hour at most. e.g if you connect your modem at 7.55 you will get free surfing till 8.25 am and rest of your surfing will be charged. so even if you dont disconnect your modem normally you wont be charged nyway.. bsnl works with half hour slabs. i.e. if you connected your modem at say 3:50 am then your free session will last upto 8:20am.. i.e. if it dosent gets mannually disconnected. similarly at the starting of night. suppose you connect your net at 1.45 your free session will start at 2:15.. based on half hour slabs.

    Look guys, don't be greedy and play with fire. I also know that there exists 30 mins grace period and I have see it happen to me also but that is BSNLs indulgence and not a waiver. Anytime they can charge for it.

    Please do not advice anyone that you get free download till 8:30 AM. Suppose BSNL decide to charge for that 30 mins what will happen:

    - in 30 minutes you can download a maximum of 256 KB/s * 60s * 30m = 450 MB
    - in 30 days you will download 13500 MB or 13.18 GB
    - if BSNL charged for the extra download you will end up charged Rs. 8749.06
    - the tax on above will be Rs. 1081.38
    - your bill will be up by Rs. 9830.44

    So play safe - that is all I will tell you.
