Ethernet will be typically 100 mbps (sometimes 1 gbps), Wifi is 54 mbps, while broadband (cable or adsl) is at most 2 mbps (sometimes 8 mbps) in India. So for internet it will make no difference - lan or wi-fi.

(For a local lan ethernet will be faster.)

as long as wifi is enabled in modem it will keep broadcasting signal even if you are connecting modem to laptop using cable.you will need a RJ45 crossover cable to connect modem to PC/laptop.usually wifi is preferred for laptop as you can freely move around & stay connected in the house.

Every wi-fi modem/router has the option to enable or disable wi-fi. It will be in 'Wireless Basic Settings'. Just disable wi-fi if you do not wish to use it.

There are two types of cables:

RJ11 - This is a telephone cable that connects modem to telephone point. It has two connections on the connector.

RJ45 - This is the Ethernet LAN cable and is thick. Also known as crossover cable. Its connector has many connections (can't recollect how many). The connector is also big.

The cable is not costly - Rs. 50 at most for a 1.5 meter cable. One comes free with the modem/router (if there is provision for RJ45 connection).
