Thanks for the prompt reply. I'll explain my problem in detail. I've a PC that runs on Windows XP and a laptop on Windows Vista. I've successfully connected my Laptop to broadband in Wireless mode. However when I'm trying to connect my PC to broadband via ethernet I'm unable to do so. The network
I think the problem is with the IP address that my PC connection is acquiring when connected.
ipconfig on PC shows
Auto configuration IP address :169.254.161.99
Subnet Mask : 255.255.0.0
Default gateway: 169.254.161.99
ipconfig on Laptop shows
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
When I tried to use the cd sent with modem in my PC, the software said it could not detect my modem
in your PC LAN TCP/IP settings set IP address 192.168.1.4,subnet mask 255.255.255.0 & default gateway 192.168.1.1 & you should be able to connect to modem.

I've changed the properties of my lan card as you suggested. But I'm still unable to connect to internet. I can't even get to the modem configuration page:-192.168.1.1.
Some updates on my problem:-
I have a laptop running on Windows Vista and a PC running on Windows XP. I have successfully connected my laptop to broadband internet connection wirelessly via the modem. However When I'm connecting to PC via ethernet cable , my modem is acquiring a APIPA address. I m unable to connect to internet via my PC. My lan card is Dlink DFI-520TX. I first configured my broadband modem with laptop via ethernet cable. Later I configured the laptop via wireless and wanted to connect my PC via wire as my PC does not have wireless capability. Now when I connect my PC to the modem via ethernet cable, the IP address acquired is 169.254.x.x with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0. I can't open my modem configuration page 192.168.1.1. If I try to repair my connection , I get the message stating there was a error renewing the IP address.
Solutions tried:-
Reinstall OS on PC

Nokia siemens Type II is it C2110 or sl2- 141 ? ( two models )
The former is not wireless type and i presume you are using SL2_141.
Such a basic information you have not given for Five months.
Go to this web site . Select your modem/router. and see whether your settings are Ok.
http://www.calcutta.bsnl.co.in/dataoneinstall/menu.htm
Para two:
The IP address of your desktop computer and Gateway should not be same.
and the IP 169.xx.xx.xx is a private lan address.
