Default Is bsnl purposly throttling connections?

Hey people i just wanted to ask something i am finding strange about my new bsnl connection.
Firstly i am a gamer, and i need to play on line games, i mostly play counterstrike source online and world of warcraft. Ever since i got the new connection i have noticed a problem. My ping for most gaming servers is too high, because of this i always get kicked out.
the server i am talking about is 202.63.160.44 this is a vstreet server located in mumbai.
Before with my old airtel connection i will get 70 ping. Now with the new connection i get 250 ping. There are 2 things that i found strange.
Firstly i would like to mention that i use the following gateway 117.198.96.1. Firstly i find that my ping becomes perfect exactly after 12 and midnight and starts screwing up at exactly 10am. What the hell is going on??? I have also noticed that if you are on the old gateway that the ones starting with 59. something you have no problem like this. Has bsnl leased this gate from someone?? or leased this gate way to someone who is using a huge bandwidth and screwing us all over. Or is bsnl doing this by purpose to driver gamers off their network??

BSNL is not capping speeds as far as I know. My connection has been down for the last 6 days but when it was up, I used to get 200+ KB/s in torrents. None of the users reported such problems and those who did was because they failed to open ports. So no problems there.

BSNL is now gone for port binding - tying up phone number to the BB account because they found that there were too many frauds and thefts going on. Since then (real) IP address has changed from 59.x.x.x to 117.x.x.x.

I would not know whether this has caused the issue you mention. I do not play games at all and have no experience with online games. But high latency will affect your game. But ping time is not just dependant on the speed but also on the load of the target server.

BSNL (or any ISP) has no reason to target gamers or heavy downloaders. If they wished to do so, they would stop night unlimited plans.

Finally, you have not mentioned your plan and I assume that your game port is open. Maybe your plan is the culprit and pehaps you need to switch to a better plan.

well just to give more info, i have a bsnl 750UL+. This is not the first time i have had bsnl connection, i have had a bsnl connection when it was 900UL+. Back then the performance and ping rate was really good. At my work place we have BSNL internet connection. they are old ones with 59 gateway. I pinged from those machines and simultaneously pinged from my machine. All 59 ips reported 70 ping while mine returned 250 . I mean what the hell is going on? K we can blame it on gateway load and so on, but this does not mean at SHARP 12 at midnight the load suddenly decreases and at exactly 10am in the morning the load again increases EVERYDAY?!?! I have contacted many friends who recently got bsnl they all report the same thing and they all have 117 as thier gateway. Something is surely fishy here. They do have a reason to drive gamers/torrenters off. I mean we are the heavy/ demanding users(in terms of bandwidth consumption). Less of us means less running cost for bsnl and less of a headache for them. This the samething that comcast in US is doing. But there they are only throttling torrents not ping rates.

between 12-10AM load on network is most due to free download/more speed.throttling is done to speeds not ping times.BSNL new network having IP's 117.x.x.x uses a different network of gateway servers & one user reported that 117.x.x.x network uses gateway servers by VSNL & AIRTEL & that's why ping times are very high because request is routed through multiple servers even when it is not the shortest possible path.that user posted a very detailed trace route of a site request & anyone can see that ping time is high because request is routed through VSNL & AIRTEL gateway servers.during night times AIRTEL & VSNL network is also under load & this may be the possible reason for high ping times.i doubt BSNL intentionally did this because there are many users who regularly download 100GB+ every month from 2-8AM & if BSNL is indeed doing speed throttling then such users will be their first target not gamers which is a minority anyway.

Ping is highly affected by the geolographical location of the servers. Also on the quality of the internet service providers and firewall settings. If you use softwares like Gamespy Comrade or Hammachi the gameplay will be lot more smoother. I get disconnected(or kicked) too when I play games like UT3 and CS. I also noticed the high ping from my PC. Gaming with BSNL connection is not satisfying. The only solution I've found is using Gamespy or Hammachi but then again I dont have too many friends who plays online. Cause you have to know the guys you want to play with when using these softwares.

but whitestar according to u during the free hours, there will be more load because people will start all thier torrents, rapidshare downloaders and so on. IE more load on the gateway, therefore i should be getting higher pings. But no its the exact opposite i am getting very low ping during free hour. If bsnl is using vsnl and airtel gateways, then packets will be routed multiple times and hence take longer to reach destination. if this is the case i should be getting higher pings any time of the day. even between 12-10am.but no. It just doesn't add up.
I used to use hamachi b4, but come on, if i am getting 250 ping to a server in mumbai connected to our NIB, what do u think the ping is going to be for someone in europe(500-2000 i tried playing wow on a netherland server, this came down to 250 during free time.). One thing i have notice is that if u ping someone having a 59 ip you still get 70, ping to airtel or any other isp you get >200. I feel the theory of bsnl sharing gateways to be false. If they were sharing then we should get lower ping.

Does anybody have a routing table that i can feed in to my modem to make use of another gateway like a 59 one?

you are right about both things.i just thought network load as a possible reason.

they are not sharing gateways.BSNL gateway is behind VSNL & AIRTEL gateways in a sequence meaning any request through BSNL's new gateway servers gets forwarded to first VSNL & then AIRTEL & that's why the higher ping rates than if the request were directly forwarded through BSNL servers like for 59.x.x.x users.this mechanism is for both indian as well as international IP's so even if you are pinging a Indian server your request will still take longer than normal.

Default You telecom is for gamers!!

if u are a gamer... switch to you telecom... downloading is just average... but for gaming its good... i used to play CS(Hitman on V-street) with my utorrent on... never affected my latency... it was like a separate bandwidth for gaming... with bsnl now I can only play online games such as internet spades..lol

    Default Conclusion

well now all my problems have been solved. Looks like i was wrong. After all bsnl is not throttling connections. The ping issue has been solved the ping is excellent 35 on vstreet servers. The download issue has gone. Looks like it was some form of maintainace they were performing on the network. But i still do get disconnections and down times. If is anyone from is reading this, look i understand that every network needs downtime, but please keep the customer informed, email them a msg informing them about the downtime and when it will be up again. That will save a lot of frustration from both our ends, i will not harrass bsnl staff till my net starts again.

i didnt do anything! it just fixed itself. i live in davengare, karnataka. Yes i am using the gateway 117. But let me tell you one thing i had complained to bsnl about my low datarate, and frequent disconnections. They came and checked my line, and found a problem with it, gave me a new line, now the disconnection problem has gone and my data rate is also good. One thing i do suggest is talk to bsnl ask if they can switch you over to the old gateway. every city has access to the old gateways(59.x.x.x). They will mostly connect u using some old port. Please do post what happens.

BSNL now-a-days is mainly using newer network(having IP 117.x.x.x)for giving out connections & it's not practical for them to just shift any customer to old 59.x.x.x network if requested because old network was getting congested & slower & that's why they created this newer network with different IP's & gateways.if you are getting high ping rates using 117.x.x.x IP but normal/good speeds then all you can do is wait for the newer BSNL network to improve.you just can't go to BSNL complaining that you are getting higher ping rates & want the older network because this is not a very serious problem for a normal user(unless you are a gamer)& majority of BSNL users aren't concerned with ping rates but only speeds which newer network is good at.in fact newer network supports 8mbps speeds even now.

Once again the star (whitestar_999) shines bright. Now that he is busy with exams and other academic work and visits us less often, we are deprived of a "walking-talking KB" during many conversations.

As suggested by whitestar, I changed mode from ADSL2+ to G.DMT in my router's setting... it dramatically improved my snr downstream value from 9 to 41... hence improving the speed...
I was facing frequent disconnections during torrent downloads... He suggested to cap the upload limit in utorrent to 20kbps... I lowered it from 50 to 20... & that did the trick... hence, improving the speed further...

Can you please tell me which plan you have right now? I have home 512 UL and the max average is between 45 and 55 kbps download!

Please give me the settings you have for the DNS. Is it because of that? Do enlighten this poor soul!

Changing DNS will only speed up initial page loading but will not increase your speed.

Are you saying 45~55 kbps or kBps? If it is kBps then you are getting 360~440 kbps. A little slow alright but not too bad.

512 kbps (64 kBps or KB/s) is the speed promised from your router to the BSNL's DSLAM server. The actual speed depends upon seeds and trackers, load on the BSNL server, etc.
